CV joint mistake
Today I changed the CV joints on my 2005 110. However, imagine how p#ssed off I was after putting everything together only to find I had forgot to put the face plate ring thing on the stub axle!!

Any problem not having it in place or do I need to take the whole blooming thing apart again?

I take it you mean the frc2310 the circular plate that rust's and bends slightly. Either way IMHO it's not the end of the world to leave it off. In fact on a CV job last week I junked it as it had almost rusted through, and had actually started to effect the stub axle by having holding the crud next to it. Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest

Yep that’s the one. It’s a mud shield apparently. Acts as a washer too, but as I loctited all the bolts I am not. Too worried.

Thanks for your reply. Will now enjoy another hour in bed as I don’t have to get up and strip the whole thing down again!

It protects the inner seal and bearings on the hub I would fit it. How would you feel if you paid a garage to repair it and they left it out? Whistle

You are technically correct nick on that. In my findings it does naff all in stopping it getting in there and soon working it's way past the seals. if you are commonly in the cack all the time. It all but barely extends past the stub axle and there is still a fair gap to the hub.

You’ll always know you didn’t fit it and in my mind it would torture me not being right.


My least favourite to work on is Dog wagons the hair gets everywhere and in everything then gets turned inside a defender to moist clumpy muddy stink balls of hair Big Cry and I have found a few đŸ’© over the years Mad

Or pig farmers were the meal has grown into a maggot infested mound behind the seats Shocked

Or sheep farmers with dirty needles hidden in all the nooks and crannies, but don’t forget the dairy farmers - the smell of manure that’s accumulated over many years ingrained in everything.

Maybe I should start a channel 4 programme “How clean is your Defender” Rolling with laughter

Wheel bearing failed - rounded the stubaxle and nut to dust, the wheel snapped the disk from the hub, then the wheel came free and wedged itself in the front of the arch. so did this one in the middle of the field. Laughing Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest
