Caterham, I hear Birmingham Council are looking for a new head of their Leisure and Tourism department. They particularly want someone with a positive and motivated passion for this great multi-cultural city. Watchoofink, sounds right up your street Whistle Rolling with laughter Monsieur Le Grenadier

For a start, you could tell everyone the little known fact ( Rolling with laughter ) that Birmingham has more canals than Venice.

And then explain that at the moment, they are safer than the canals in Manchester

in terms of the Manchester canals and the map with red dots - Birmingham has a similar maps with red dots showing areas that have from time to time been regarded as safe. I used to cycle the canals to work so I should know....

I take it you mean that you cycled the towpaths, rather than the canals! Rolling with laughter

I found a body once in a Manchester canal. I was on a boat at the time, and there was a body floating face down in the water, amongt the weeds, refuse, shopping trollies, and other debris that gets thrown in the canals. It fortunately turned out to be a partially clothed full size shop mannequin, but in the filthy water and slime you could only tell when you flipped it over with a pole.

Quite scary at the time, especially as one of the canals we'd intended to navigate was actually closed at the time to allow a pound to be drained for a body search.

I can also vividly remember the awful stench from the Kraft margarine factory at Old Trafford. Another profoundly unpleasant experience. Who needs foreign holidays, eh?

Laughing

yeah the tow paths.

your story about the body reminds me of the time I was driving down the motorway and this Navara type pick up comes flying past with a mannequin in the back dressed with baseball cap, flying glasses / ray bans, leather jacket and long blond hair blowing in the wind Cool

a mile or two later it had pulled over Shocked only it was the real deal - not a mannequin!

Blackwolf, the Kraft Margarine stunk worse than the dead body?

The Coventry Canal used to be a lot like that between Hawkesbury Junction and the City Basin. Courtalds Chemicals were responsible for that back in the 80's. Never found a body, but we did manage to run over the top of a sofa. Well I think that was what it was.

There has been quite a renaissance in the Canals around Manchester. 25 years ago we would start early and push through Manchester in one day without stopping. Paying the Manchester Ship Canal Co for the privilege of passing through possibly the worst maintained wide beam locks on the system, dodging the glue sniffers and druggies at Dulcie Street top lock in a hell hole of the twilight under the buildings and then chancing your luck with the Ashton Canal and the 'yoofs' looking for trouble.

Im told it's all a lot different now. The Canal and River Trust (that were British Waterways) have taken over the waterway and I am told it is all a lot more pleasant.

As I have said before on here, I have a soft spot for Birmingham and the Black Country - especially their canals. Saying that, I don't have to live there.

Caterham, have they still got the beach under spaghetti junction?

I'll be honest I'm not sure, I don't think so but the beach thing does ring some bells but I'm not so sure as to why?

While googling the beach thing, I found this:

http://www. Censored .co.uk

We have something similar in East Anglia:

https://www.suffolkgazette.com

It rips hell out of us Norfolk people, but I still find it amusing.

Thumbs Up

As with all good humour, there is just a teeny weeny bit of truth in all of the Suffolk Gazettes posts.

Yup, noticed that. Also the 'share now' advice for Social Media:

Hmm
I was Born in Birmingham and lived there until I was 13 in Sparkhill (don't laugh). That was 40 years ago. Birmingham in the 1970s, as I remember, was a dump unless you lived in Shirley or Solihull. Looking back I think its greatest architectural improvement is the M6 toll Laughing
