I believe the crank sensor is for starting purposes and can't imagine why with the engine off the value should vary so sounds like a plausible reason to suspect a problem.
good luck. |

right side top fly wheel plug on wire end
Crank sensor 400 ohm work shop manual shows aluminium shroud over it ( will make note in manual ) thank may be induct voltage as crank sensor cable is not screened Last edited by dorsetsmith on 5th Dec 2019 8:29pm. Edited 4 times in total |

I think that you may be confusing the camshaft position sensor with the crankshaft position sensor (or I may be inferring too much from your comment)! The crankshaft position sensor is used all the time the engine is running, and is essential to allow the ECM to determine when to inject fuel. It is used for starting, but not just for starting. The camshaft position sensor is used only during startup, and is used to allow the ECM to determine which of the two revolutions of the four-stroke cycle that crankshaft is on in order to avoid injecting fuel on the wrong cycle. Once the synchronisation has been established, the signal from the camshaft sensor is (apparently) not 'read'. I would not expect there to be a signal on either sensor's output when the engine is stationary, with the possible exception of a low level of background noise from EMI. If there is anything that could be mistaken for a valid rotational signal. it is highly likely that you will have all manner of issues. |

I believe the shroud is aluminium and may help reduce EMI as well as heat? bottom line though as Blackwolf has suggested wouldn't expect to see variations with engine off? |

I think from memory the figures were quite small, I can't check now as I have returned the nanocom to Mike who kindly let me have his for a few days, mine is due on Friday from Cyprus so I can check then. It could just be interference if the figures are small.

I think my CPS shroud had fallen off before the vehicle left the factory! It's certainly never had one in the time I've owned it.

mine was off for a while and certainly I perceived no difference with or without.
I'm guessing disconnecting the CP sensor and running something metal by it (ferrous) should be enough to determine if the sensor is faulty or not once you have the nonocom back - BW would you agree? |
