Talk to Devon I think there clubman range look pretty standard

Another vote for the Devon. I asked the same and was recommended the Devon 4X4 by forum members & people like Gigglepin - quality bit of kit that looks standard

Flinty you asked also about winches, most recommended Goodwinch when I was looking for a more budget price model. I bought the Warn M8000 for £550 as it was a bargain and suits my non-recovery needs! BUT as Big Mike will tell you there are cheaper, better and more powerful winches than than the now dated M8000. The Warn 9.5XP is the big boy for those with dosh to throw about

Goodwinch is definitely the one to have in terms of value for a decent product. avoid Tmaxx etc.

I fitted a complete package from first four. The winch is a champion 9500 and has proved to be good enough for normal use. Again the goodwinch packages get good reviews. I would say shop about and get a complete package from a reputable dealer, if you're not winching every day and it's mainly for self recovery ( not in a rush) most of the standard winches are perfectly capable. I would more interested in finish quality i.e. how long will it last before corrosion sets in on both winch and bumper. Painted galvanised would be the route for me if I bought another. You can also get a perfectly adequate remote off ebay for @ £25. Remeber you can always double line a smaller winch, it'll just be a little slow. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

I went for the OEM winch bumper, Mantec I believe.
Its been on the truck for the last 3 years and has yet to show any signs of rusting, more than I can say for the rest of the car! 2002 Defender 110 DC |

Thanks all, I do like the idea of a complete package just for ease.
I was initially looking at a SuperWinch not sure how they rate? I also found a portable winch http://www.firstfour.co.uk/portable-winche...659351.php which apeals as I don't need to have it attacked all the time and for the recovery I do may be a good option. Also lowers my insurance as well as no modifications made to my vehicle.
Also, being portable means I can use it front and rear as well as on another vehicle if that was a better option for the recovery. Anybody got a view on the portable winch? |

Generally good. The Superwinch Husky is the only electric winch to achieve industrial quality, but as usual you pay a hefty price for the best. Most winch bumpers don't take a Husky; my bumper is from Mantec but Devon 4x4 are working on one I believe. I think (and maybe someone can confirm this) that all the other winches in the Superwinch range are of American design, and the Husky series (ex Fairy Winches of Tavistock) is the only British design in the range, and is still made in Devon. Here's a rather distant photo of mine.
For portable winches, the good old Tirfor can't be beaten. It will work anywhere (including underwater) and is the only single-vehicle solution that will work even if the vehicle is upside-down. It also keeps you fit! |
