Snorkel benefits?

Finally bought my defender and it has a snorkel fitted. I’m not a huge fan, but apart from the obvious when it comes to water ingress, are there any other advantages? I won’t be wading though more than 12” of water so don’t need it for that element, so just deciding whether to take it off.

You have to seal all of the intake system before it's a snorkel. What you have at the moment is a raised air intake. Ok it's taking air from where there's less dust etc. They do have a impact on performance so it's your choice.

Also worth remembering that you will have extra holes to fill and spray, and possible damage to the wing!

Yep, I had considered that, which will be a pain! This is why I am balancing up the benefits of just leaving it on.

Check your insurers, my old one refused to insure ours, I phoned for a simple change of vehicle and had my insurance cancelled. 3 Landrovers

BAS did some tests and proved the intake does restrict airflow, so unless you need it or particularly like it, I'd take it off.

If you remove the rain separator and do the airbox mod though the results are borderline differences.

Horses for courses really in my view, I am however not a fan of RAI's as they have in my point little purpose.
A Snorkel even if not used as designed which very few will is sealable and as such fit for purpose.
Mine is sealed except for the airbox base drain hole, which A, I could seal if needed. B, is a good drain exit point.
I could seal it entirely but personally I'd rather have a drain point present than none in case of atmosphere fluid ingress.

You could use a rubber plug too I guess, which would be easy in and out but let's face it how many Puma owners wade that deep! $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

If you remove the water separator in the airbox it near enough cancels out the snorkels restriction.

It depends how you word it. That's a genuine Land Rover one, and probably been fitted from new. In which case you wont need to tell your insurer as it's considered standard. The question you have to ask them is "do you need to know about manufacturer fitted accessories?" every insurer I've ever spoken to says no.

In terms of real world performance though it's not noticeable having one fitted. - I know because I fitted one, and saw no difference in performance or fuel economy.

About the only thing they'll do is help keep a bit of dust out of your air filter, theoretically it will keep the air filter cleaner for longer which will improve performance in the long term - but again I doubt this would actually be noticeable.

One potential benefit to them, is if you fit a light bar, either on a roof rack or a stand alone one, it gives you somewhere convenient to route the cables down to the engine bay without drilling holes in the roof.

Not always. I had this issue with my Tomb Raider as it had the optional "Extreme" pack which included a Mantec snorkel from the factory.

The insurance took the stance that if it was factory fitted then it was fine, but if it was an optional extra then my insurance would be cancelled. Luckily whoever wrote the Wikipedia page wrongly said it was standard

Oh and that was Adrian Flux, the so called modified specialists
