No, this suggests that it is something other than the VCV on this occasion. The temp gauge shooting to FSD* is one of the symptoms often seen if the relays under the OSF seat are not seated properly or are not tightly connected, although this is more common with a failure-to-start fault than a loss of power when running.

It would be worth checking earth connections to the battery, chassis, and bulkhead too.

Temp readings can be misleading since the temp indicator (I don't really like to call it a gauge because it isn't) is driven by the IPAC and will shown 'normal' for a whole range of operating temperatures, but will shoot up if the normal range is exceeded. It may be that the coolant sensor or CHT sensor has a problem, or it may be that the temperature really is high and the ECM is protecting the engine. It would be informative to run with a diagostic tool connected to monitor the actual reported temperature.

Many people on here have had problems associated with high temperatures.

(*FSD = full scale deflection)

Thanks Blackwolf.

When I opened the bonnet and also felt around the footwell, brake lever etc, all felt normal. No 'sense' of it overheating. I'll certainly check the coolant this arvo.

Interesting that you mention battery connections. Would the dealership who tackled the Output Shaft and Clutch replacement have disconnected the battery? This all started after I picked it up in Palma last week. Never before.

Further, and also after I picked it up and was on the motorway, I found I had a small wiring loom issue which effected the OS headlight and indicator (British car). I played with the wires and connectors near where they enter the bulkhead and coolant res is, just as a temp measure to get me home. I have not touched them since, but do we think this might have shorted the wiring to the CHT given it is in the same place? Monsieur Le Grenadier

I just checked the coolant reservoir and I am unbelievably embarrased to say it is empty. Not low, empty! Shocked

I can only assume this is the cause of the overheating and that the ECU safety/limp home mode has been kicking in. Of greater concern is where an entire reservoir and system's worth of coolant has gone, given I have not had any spraying in the engine compartment, nor have seen any (ever) under the car, I'm at a loss. Not a smidge. I'll fill her up and see what comes of it.

I looked under the bonnet and tried to cover most of the coolant system as best I can with the Def sitting on the street in central Cham, limited tools, bad light and rain. However, I 'may' have found the culprit as this pipe (thanks to another forum member who posted this photo in 2014), was not seated properly. Probably 1cm from being flush with the heater control valce. No sign of excess spray/spillage, but perhaps enough has eeked out over time. I think this might have been a very, very slow leak. Will commit to a more complete check once I've topped up the coolant and got the DC back home.

Too true. Embarassed And I certainly did before driving down to Mallorca, just not after picking her up from the LR dealer in Palma before driving home. You live and learn... Big Cry Monsieur Le Grenadier

My father totalled the engine in a brand new Series IIA station wagon after picking it up from the dealer. They had forgotten to fill the radiator. That story is still doing the rounds in our family after 50 years so we all do try to do checks ourselves before long journeys. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

Given the nearest French 'Halfords' is 25kms away, out of the valley, with no public transport, I'm thinking of refilling with water to get me home. I can secure at least 4 litres of deionized water (not distilled), possibly more, as I'm led to believe I may need as much as ten litres to refill the full coolant system which looks dry. Is it general consensus that this will be OK until I can do a full bleed and refill? Will likely cover no more than 50kms in the interim and local temps will not be getting close to freezing for some time. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Yes, without a doubt. There are also earth connections to the gearbox which would have been disconnected.

Mea Culpa
Topped up the coolant, 'just' 2 litres needed. ECU light out immediately, full power on tap, no ECO safety mode, normality restored Thumbs Up

It goes to show that despite my education, life experiences, travels, and general awesomeness etc etc, I can still be a complete moron at 45 years of age. Whistle
