Replaced injector seals
Hello All.

Sorry to again call for advice, but I'm looking for some help. I very carefully replaced my fuel injector washers, seals ect. Following helpful guidance gleaned from here and other sources. Its a 2010 2,4 model.

I tried to be as careful as possible and kept everything very clean.

When I stated the engine after refitting, there was a lot of white smoke from the exhaust accompanied by a BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG. I have a fault code P121c.

Has anyone got any ideas as to-what I might have done, or experienced this issue? If I have damaged one of the injectors, is there a way of identifying which one(s)?

The copper seals I replaced were all in good condition with no visible damage. I think I may need to involve a grown up, but right now there's no way I could drive that car anywhere.

Possible causes,
Faulty Fuel Injector
Fuel Injector harness is open or shorted
Fuel Injector circuit poor electrical connection


I’ve got a load of good second hand injectors if you need one? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

Thanks, yes I read that code, the problem is that I don't know how to diagnose which of those things I have,

Open or shorted harness is easy to find, just examine it closely for any damage.

Poor connection might just be a case of you forgot to reconnect something or didn't push it home fully.

Faulty injector is a bit more difficult to find.

Have you got access to a lab scope, or Noid lights?

Test for voltage at injector harness.

I would say it’s probably a damaged injector. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Thank you both very much.

Harness and all connectors look fine. Reconnected all to be sure, but no change. Seems to point to an injector fault.

I have no specialist equipment, which is another reason I should have been more careful. I wiped some debris off the ends of a few of the injectors. I knew to be careful, but had no idea they quite so sensitive.

Lesson learned, the expensive way.

couple of things -

did you use or spray any brake cleaner into the injector seat / bore? I did that with my glow plugs and injectors and it did something similar when first started. i.e. its burning that and not diesel.
are the injectors back in their original locations? 1953 80"

Hello,

Yes, injectors back in their original positions, as I did them one at a time.

I may have sprayed some 'electronic cleaner' on one or two of them. I also may have bumped the end of one on the way down into the block, but that is the worst thing that could have happened. I was pretty careful.

The last time I started the engine, it had improved slightly. I'm scared to run it as I did not know if the BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG was causing any damage.

I will run it again and see if it has improved based on your experience. I have also found a place that can check the injectors for operation. Its expensive but its my best option.

The injectors will make a racket bouncing up and down if they aren't adequately clamped upon reinstallation. When it's running can you see them move? If so, did you get new (torque to yield) clamp bolts and follow the WSM suggested fastening process?

If not, be careful to not just tighten them up even more to solve it, there is a small but real chance the applied torsion could shear the bolt. You'll have even worse problems then. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

If your getting p121c as a fault code, this is telling you that one of Your injectors is leaking, hence the white smoke!
The injector is obviously firing, so you can rule out any electrical fault.

Get that injector tested, it’s worth just checking if the seal is ok and clean on the seat, just incase compression is a bit lower on that cylinder.

Run it up, and remove each injector plug one by one until you find the one that’s causing the problem,

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me.

Injector 2 was the damaged injector. I just unplugged it and the engine ran (surprisingly) nicely on the 3 remaining cylinders. No smoke.

It is common sense to you, but you have helped me so much. Saving me both time and money. Bow down

In your opinion, do I need to buy a new injector, or would it be worth having it tested before I do that?

Lastly, when I fit the new injector, does the learning process I have read about just happen, or does it have to be programmed?

Thanks again. My weekend has improved a lot in the last 20 minutes.

I do have the torque to yield bolts (6NM?), but the originals went back in for a dummy run. Which I am glad I did now.

Not sure how prices compare where you are?
I brought a new Denso injector 2 weeks ago for £149 (trade)

It is sometimes cheaper to replace them, than have them tested and repaired.
So that’s your call, but might be worth just checking on repair prices.

Yes, you will have to code the injector, it’s a simple procedure, and I would have thought a friendly garage would do it for an hours labour charge?

Refit the new bolts when your ready with the new/repaired injector, your spot on with 6Nm.

I get them from England anyway. So around 200 pounds for me.

I might jump straight in with a new one, if nothing apparent about the installation of the duff one emerges when I take it out.

In my workshop manual is written, that the torque for these two bolts is 6Nm + 180 degrees. Be careful not hit anything with lowest point of the injectors as this is the area where the diesel leaves the injector through very tiny holes.
