I don't usually duplicate posts but thought this extract from my camping holiday thread might go well here:
I spent Friday at the Great Dorset Steam Fair, which is a fantastic event. As you would expect, there are lots of steam engines – 500 this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary. I took well over a hundred photos but here are just a selection to give a flavour of the thing: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge There were also lots of Land Rovers on display of various ages: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Some younger than expected – this 101 was part of a batch of four built in 1984, as the army had decommissioned its’ others. The front panel is hand built and joined in the middle, as original single piece panels were no longer available: Click image to enlarge Then there was more exotic machinery like this Austin Gypsy fire engine: Click image to enlarge An AEC Matador: Click image to enlarge And more Scammells than you could shake a stick at: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Preserving an historic commercial vehicle is a big undertaking, but the burden is lessened somewhat if you can give it a new purpose : Click image to enlarge I’ve always had a thing for interesting military vehicles, of which there were plenty: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge There were three of the Scorpion’s hooning around an arena for ten minutes, which was fun to watch. There was also some vintage plant in action: Click image to enlarge And by way of a contrast, what’s not to like about a Reliant milk float? Click image to enlarge The above is really just a taste, though. There were stationary engines, steam cars, bulldozers, tractors, mechanical horses, buses, lorries, motorbikes and all manner of other mechanical stuff from over the last 100 years. There is also what must be the most eclectic auto jumble in the world. Amongst the farm implements, tools and lorry parts though, the stand out item was a trailer full of plastic gorillas Click image to enlarge Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? Legin, great pics, great event, thanks for sharing.
I lived in Herefordshire in the early 50s and can still remember these steam engines used on farms, and also on roads in a "steam roller" configuration. Also, in my school days, I went to school on occasions by train, which was pulled by a steam engine. Yes, I just love STEAM, Pickles. |

The tanker converted into a living unit was a beauty ,the welding and thought that had gone into this was unbelievable also watching the RB's and other plant at work a nice trip to my younger days to when I left school and worked on a site at 15 years old you where put in the unloading gang no fork lifts just five of us young lads would unload everything from bricks to windows, baths and sinks, and make the tea and all I wanted to do was drive a digger !Back to the show watching the steam engine come up the hill some fully loaded was the best , Avelingporter that's it like to drive one of these engine's at speed and loaded.

We arrived Thursday and were booked in until today but by lunchtime yesterday the weather was so bad we gave up. The wind and rain were horrendous, crowd numbers were considerably down and a lot of stalls and exhibits were closed. We walked round for a couple of hours, got soaked and decided to go home. Packing up in the wind and rain was hard work and we were lucky not to lose the Foxwing, but eventually got everything packed away soaking wet. Leaving was slightly delayed as we waited while several tractors towed coaches and camper vans out of the muddy car parks. Despite the weather conditions it didn't spoil the event for us, we had 3 great days there and enjoyed every minute, despite not seeing everything because the event is so big. We spent this morning cleaning and drying the 110 and the camping gear.
