Another Tyre Post - Road Tyres
Does anyone run on out and out road tyres ? Do they make a significant difference to fuel economy and refinement/less noisy.
I'm thinking of getting a set for my spare wheels for long motorway journeys. Something like these

215/65R16 GENERAL GRABBER UHP 98(H) 110 HT TD5 - 110 XS SW Puma

Looking at your gallery your already on road biased tyres so why bother ?

They're All terrain tyres . I drive across the country twice a month and right now , in the summer , thought it makes sense to have slick road tyres especially if i can squeeze some MPG out of em. Put the AT's back on in the autumn.. 110 HT TD5 - 110 XS SW Puma

why put on 215/65 when stock LR tyre size is 235/85? your gearing would change and it ll be very revvy. pointless to be honest, your normal tyres dont have an aggressive tread pattern.

For the the extra outlay in rims and a set of tyres you would need to be doing a silly amount of miles to justify it Rolling Eyes Stick with what you've got Thumbs Up

The extra revs caused by the smaller diameter would use up any fuel saved anyway Laughing

So you can't match the standard tyre diameter with road tyres. I know I listed the wrong tyre size. Deffo don't want big flashy set of alloys and skinny tyres.
The continental's I've got are pretty good I must admit.

yes you can get 235/85 tyres in road patterns but why would you want to? the price of the wheels and new tyres would be far far in excess of any fuel saving. if you had simex jungles on then sure, change them but you already have fairly tame tyres anyway. dont sweat it

I have a set of standard defender steels with a set of michelin 4x4 o/r Xzl. The idea was to put the continental AT on those rims and a set of road tyres on the boost rims.
If you compare the road noise between the michelin's and conti's it's a BIG difference my logic was that a road tyre would again be a big difference from the Cont's AT.
Just for those long boring journey's on fast roads, i thought a road tyre might make the journey's better. Ie faster cornering and quieter road hum.
Like you say though seems hardly worth the expense for such little gains. 110 HT TD5 - 110 XS SW Puma
