Truck failed us in France
After a day of Ferry trips, 4 hour drives and various start stops in France, went to leave our final destination to go back to a Hotel, and guess what, the fault that I had with the vehicle that went away over 2 months ago resurfaced.....turn the key in ignition, turns over 4 times and stops, I have used the truck over here daily in those two months and its been fine. How can I track this down?. Luckily had EU breakdown cover, they trailored it to the hotel, and were coming back the following morning to trailor it to a garage. Got up next morning and it started fine, refused to stop the engine all morning till we got on the ferry incase it wouldn't start again, not much fun for the wife and dog...or me. Is it the immobiliser ? Is it related to the immobiliser ie fuel pump cut off, why does it always turn over exactly 4 times then stop ? The next time I turn the key, nothing, until I set/unset the key fob, can it be the ignition switch not making a set of contacts? the first time it happened here in the UK the only thing that cured it was overnight, so the two factors involved there are time and temperature. Disconnected the battery to reset things, still the same, it wasn't an overly hot day over there, the only thing different I did the time it wouldn't start was lock the car with the fob, then unset it when we wanted to leave. I have done that same operation many times with no issue over here. Can the fob be faulty and only partially unset the immobiliser? How does the fob work, I have heard some stories of other radio frequencies blocking Land Rover fobs?
Any help would be most appreciated, at the moment I am not in love with the truck Sad It was a very stressful 36 hours having to worry about how to get the family home Sad

Its not battery related, its a new one, its not alternator related, tested it with a ring charger/conditioner

I have located the immobiliser, it seems to be a YWC500640

It has a single orange wire not connected to anything coming off one off the connectors, maybe a function that isn't used on the Puma?

I notice it says 433Mhz on it, so can it be interfered with by another source of 433Mhz ? Also does anyone know if the key fobs talk to the immobiliser once the alarm is disarmed ? ie if the key fob is faulty or low batt, can it interfere with the starting of the truck ?

The fob does have to be in the vicinity of the ignition when starting and the alarm and immobiliser has to be disarmed before starting.
Have you tried just pressing unlock before starting?

Turning over, sometimes starting and then shutting down is often the immobiliser if armed and starting is attempted.
There should also be no armed dash light flashing either when you go to start. (Red.)

I'm sure someone will be along shortly that knows more the electronic intricacies to it than I do.
Checking the plug to the rear of the IPAC. (Instrument cluster.) is securecis also an issue that can occasionally occur.
Also that Relays under drivers seat are secure. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

yeh tried all that but thanks, it never fires, just exactly 4 turns of the starter I am guessing, then cutout, no firing.

I had a similar problem. Go to start, turn over a few times then dead....but locking and unlocking always cured it.

I plugged my nanocom in and turned off the passive immobilisation and that cured it

With regards to the orange wire, yes it is indeed the aerial for the device, A guy I spoke to who repaires these units said the bare wire at the end should be insulated so it can’t touch anything and degrade the reception of the unit, I have now taped over the bare end just in case........mine was bare exposed wire

Interesting.... It sounds to me like RF interference or a duff exciter ring. I get a similar issue now I have a X-eng steering lock fitted to mine. If I don't hold the fob in the right place I get either nothing, a turn over for a few times and stop, or sometimes it even fires then dies. V8 90...WIP

What talks to what on the unit, what is the aerial on the 10AS unit picking up, and why have the exiter ring around the ignition as well as, surely the aerial can Pic up both signals?

The exciter ring round the steering is for the immobiliser: It talks to the fob bit of my key set up (a 2013 car with a separate black fob and key).

The AS10 aerial picks up the signal when you press the button on the fob. V8 90...WIP

Ok thanks.....makes sense.......would a low batt in the key fob cause an immobiliser confusion, the new batteries I put into both remotes a few months ago seem to measure only 1.6 volts instead of 3, well one certainly does, could 1 low batt remote in the car cause issues with the good fob OOI ?
