Your problem is 99% related with the engine temperature.
In my case the cut off happens at 115 deg but in your car it can be 110. Now, good luck finding out what is the problem and don't forget to share the solution Here you will find some tips: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56815.html Bergos LR Defender 110 HT 2007 (2.4 Puma) https://www.facebook.com/LR.Wanderlust/ |

Thnx Bergos, Did you finally solve it with the belt change? So far I replaced the thermostat (For a 82 degrees opening version). I also mounted the visco-fan extender. The stupid thing is now the engine even heats up more.....and faster. Normaly it was only with +30 ambient temperatures on the highway (120 kmh) I had the problem. Now I have it already after a 7 km drive from home ( ambient temperaturen about 20 degrees, 80 kmh). Frustrating! Now I want to put the old thermostat back to see of there is anu difference (I checked it with hot water, thermostat opened).
It is a long list what could cause the overheating, at least in my opinion: Leak in cooling system (had that, changed coolant hoses) Thermostat (changed) Visco-fan (föhnded it yesterday with hot air, didn't feel any difference in torque increasement when turning it...... Water pump Radiator (cleaned it from the outside, no difference). Head gasket Egr cooler (when leaking blowing exhaust gases in the coolant). Your symptoms are not good
At 120 deg head temp. your engine should actually shut down. This happened to me only once when I let the coolant reservoir open and the fluid was blown out. In my case changing the belt helped. No I rarely exceed 100 deg while driving 120 km/h uphill. Sometimes it goes to 105-110 deg but goes down to 88-92 very fast after the uphill. For me it is still a bit strange but "people say" that it is normal. I have also completely removed the stupid EGR. Good luck! At 112 degrees (calculated) coolant temperature the engine went into 'high temperature protection mode'.

The important temperature here is the Cylinder Head Temperature. The threshold is 115 deg. Bergos

When you look at the Printscreen the CHT is 120 degrees, calculated coolant temperature is 110 degrees. At a calculated temperature from 112 degrees the protection mode kicks in (no gaspedal response). Exact values probably vary a bit depending on the OBD tool you use.

Could it be as simple as a faulty CHT sensor?

You probably have an airco. Because this problem only happens with aircon models.
I had the same problem as you. Finally I solved it by replacing the radiator with a bigger one. First i also tried the temp 82 degrees and the visco fan extender. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover |

It could and it's worth checking this in the first place but I would not hope it's just this
In this case the first thing to do is a block test. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Rwip1aCNF4 If the block test turns out to be positive (exhaust gas leak confirmed) I would block the EGR at the exhaust manifold, before the EGR cooler and repeat the test. If the second test is positive you need to repair your engine or replace it whichever comes cheaper. Bergos LR Defender 110 HT 2007 (2.4 Puma) https://www.facebook.com/LR.Wanderlust/ |

Yep, I have airco. EGR is closed ( by hardware and software). Stil have to do the CO test

Faulty cht sensor is possible. However I checked mine at 20 degrees and at 100 degrees (static test). Values were OK. The nummer of the old model cht sensor changed ('Microcat).

The cylinder head leakage test seems to be OK.
Blue means no CO. However...I don't feel much difference in visco fan resistance whether the engine is cold or hot. Visco fan can easily turned around by hand. Anybody who checked his visco fan this way, could you really feel the difference? Click image to enlarge |

The visco will turn slowly for a while and should engage when it gets hot, usually with the hot air coming from the radiator.
Until it engages it can be easily stopped by hand. After - don't try to touch it if you like your fingers. Drive the car for a while, stop it, open the hood and try to stop the fan with a rolled newspaper. If you are able to stop it, you need a new visco. When she Is hot, stop, open bonnet , you will be able to hear the viscous locked up and feelbthe draw and rearward movement of air.
After then stopping the engine check fan resistance, I would suggest , it shoukd be hard to turn by hand, if it spins freely its goosed. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |
