Rattling clutch, transfer box leak
The vehicle is MY07 with 45k km on the clock. Symptoms:
- two days ago I have realised like something was rubbing while driving - squeak, squeak, squeak... more frequent than wheels revolutions
- yesterday disengaged clutch stared to rattle while driving (till now I didn't know what you guys mean by 'loose spanners rattle' - now I know Very Happy )
- today I have looked under the vehicle and saw leak at transfer box (see the picture)

I have changed the T-box oil week ago to Valvoline HP 80W-90 GL-5 (as well as other fluids) at independent garage.

Can it be that something was done wrong during fluids replacement?
Can you suggest what parts need replacing / fixed to cure it?

Cheers! Janusz

Second part of the question: can I drive the car in the meantime or do I risk further damages? Janusz

Can't really help with much advice on this, but I would be interested to hear the answer and the opinions of anyone else.

My clutch has been rattling quite badly for the last 40k miles, but it doesn't seem to be getting any worse and seems to work as well (or badly) as it ever did. I am not sure whether I should fork out the £££ to get it changed, when by the sound of it the replacement might be no better, or just live with a rattling clutch. Will it evetually disintegrate cause more widespread damage?

[rant]I don't know why LR seem to be incapable of building a vehicle with a good clutch anymore. The TD5 clutch was rubbish, due to the ridiculous and unnecessary dual-mass flywheel; the Puma should have been great, with a conventional flywheel, but they still manage to make an apalling job of it. It can't be hard to come up with a good and durable clutch, most other manufacturers manage it![/rant]

probably you can reach the shop. The rattle comes from the natural noise produced by the input-output shaft of the gearbox (typical on diesel engines) which is not dampened anymore by the central damper of the friction plate. I would just not demand a lot of torque., ie do not do full throttle when under 2000 rpm. Of course do it at your own risk. Good luck

Oil leak: How much oil did they use? Clean it and spot the source of the leak.
You have also a leak on the rear of the Tbox (there is a service call about it)
Did you exchange the clutch already? Or still on the old version?

Thumbs Up Puma 110" SW

Thank you for the answers Very Happy
I will go to the garage on Saturday.

I do not know how much oil was filled - it was done by guys experienced with Patrols, Discos, Cheerokees so I assume they did it right with Defender.

Tbox leak - is it "Park brake oil contamination" call or another one?
The clutch is old version, my car was born Feb 2007 and still on the 1st clutch.
New clutch kit is on the way. Janusz

Check the level: it is 2.3 L, reaching just under the filling hole (but I do not think it is the problem). But your main leak comes from the front of the Tbox. On the right side and top of the Tbox there is breather with a small hose. Check it is on. Puma 110" SW

Can you recommend a supplier selling latest version of the clutch?
I have bought one already which supposed to be new, but it was not (manufactured March 2007).
While I have returned the part, this time I want to be sure it is new one. Unfortunately none of five suppliers I have asked have replied to my inquiry.

Cheers! Janusz

Dear all

My Defender built 2007 with now approx. 45k km on the odo has developed the same exact issues. Probably I will need to have the clutch replaced soon.

I would be particularly interested in the oil leak issue: a first check under the vehicle confirmed that oil is leaking fron the backside of the transfer box.

How did you people solve this issue?

Best
Ter
