300tdi smoking and running rough
was driving home and my 300tdi started making a slight chugging noise like a steam train then about 5 mins later i lost most of my power and lots of whitish grey smoke out of exhaust,
it starts straight up first turn of key but runs rough and engine shaking, smoke smells like diesel or oil,
took intercooler hose off top and it had a coating of oil in it,
no bubbles in expansion tank and not pressure under rocker cover when cap off just usual slight putting of clean air,
went around the block and its like its only running on 3 cylinders, any ideas lads? Sad

i think it will be either injectors or turbo charger or cylinder head, but need to narrow it down as all of those bits are expensive,, Shocked

The first easy thing to check is take the rocker cover off and see if the rocker shaft is snapped and that the pads between the valve tops and rocker arms are still all there.

exellent, will do that first thing tomorow, would that cause lumpy running and lots of smoke?

Crack the injector pipes in turn and see if anything changes, may help pinpoint a cylinder

Have you checked you’ve not split the intercooler? Are all the pipes connected and not split?

check ( take off and inspect internally) the IC hose from the turbo, the first one with the 90 deg bend. They de lamiinate and implode, blocking the passage of air, possibly split. check others as well.
check ( when stone cold) remove the expansion bottle cap, if there is an audible psssst! then system is pressurized, ie head gasket failure.
check, when running, some soapy water in a squedgy spray (garden spray) bottle, and squirt around the rear of the head / block interface, and look for bubbles.

good luck, and keep us posted.

have replaced intercooler pipes with new silicone ones, i did notice the intercooler itself had a tiny bit of oil at the top on the finns, maybe starting to go, but would that cause rough running and smoke?

Has a heater plug wound itself out? That would explain the chuffing.

check for damage to start with

1. tappet adjustment screw and nut missing or loss
2. push rod bent or ends damage
3. valve spring broken
4. cam follower damage
5. valve bent and jam open
