Definitely not the viscous fan kicking in? It’s quite a loud, roaring/rushing noise. I find mine doesn’t kick in much but is most likely heard after driving at higher road speeds and then slowing down, e.g for a junction or similar.
Failing that... When did you last change the air filter? Perhaps you’ve got some debris in there? It’s simple to take the lid off and pop out the filter to take a look 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2 |

My 2015 90 does very similar - as you say, more noticeable with the recent requirement to have windows open.
I guess you've not got aircon either then! |

Sprinters used to do that. It was the DPF regen cycle.

Mine does this. More noticeable when I put a new filter in. It also sounds different when I use a non genuine air filter. Mine is in properly and the air box is sealed. I just put it down to Induction noise. I do know the cough you talk about though.

That's exactly what it sounds like and what I thought it was. I just thought I would ask others of their opinion and experiences. Discovery 4 HSE

Mine does this, especially when you’re between 1500 and 2000RPM. Pretty sure it’s the recirculating valve/turbo noise. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

All fixed. Removed air filter, cleaned air box and hoovered filter (would have bought a new one but going for a full service in two weeks) , sound gone and runs even better than she did before with no unusual noises. Thumbs Up Discovery 4 HSE
