leaking coolant - bigger issues?
noticed on my 200 TDi defender a large pool of liquid underneath it in the spring. Didn't have time to look at it then.

Looked at it today - very little coolant, so topped up with water as suspected leak - indeed, it's flooding out the top fan pulley and from a slit in the main hose from filler to radiator.

So clearly it's frozen and split stuff over the winter. I may well have cocked up antifreeze levels Banging Head . However, that's by the by.

Happy enough to replace water pump and hoses, but have background concern that it may have done engine block damage. Anyone any experience of this happening? Am hopeful that the solid nature of the engine and the fact that it's clearly relieved pressure elsewhere means it's probably ok.

Anyone know if there's a good way to tell? Oil seems fine on dipstick, and until I get the parts I can't run it much - I assume I'd see white smoke in the exhaust from leaking water if it was a problem? Any other ways to tell?

thanks! (fingers crossed, hey?!)

You can disconnect a small diameter pipe, like the one going to the header tank, and pump it up a bit with a bicycle pump or similar (that is engine side not header tank side). Don't get carried away just use 10psi or so. If you can tee in a pressure gauge that would be best, if not just feel the top hose for firmness and see if it gets softer.
If you think any pressure drop then turn the engine over by hand or pushing the car in gear in case you have filled a cylinder with water.
