Evans Cycles always serve me well and offer good advice. As said above Decathlon bikes are good too.

I have a Ridgeback hybrid that I bought for cycling in London and I love it. About £350, solid as a rock but not as heavy as one. Essentially it's a mountain bike with no suspension and slick tyres. I have spare knobbly tyres for the rough stuff which makes it cover all bases for me. Highly recommend that set up and make - and it's British made like the 110!
