They are (I think) 5/16" UNF fasteners for some utterly incomprehensible reason and I replaced mine for the same reason you want to with M8 setscrews, washers, and nylon insert stiff nuts in grade 8.8, available universally. I can't offhand remember the length.
I also fitted mine the other way up to the original so the nut is on top and in the car, not underneath in all the crud. That way they won't rust and become impossible to remove. |

It was always a problem with BL group products. You'd find a mix of UNF, UNC and Metric fittings on things. I wouldn't be surprised if there were even whitworth fittings too! I seem to remember something with brake pipes that had metric fittings on one end and UNF on the other! It's like when you take something off and find 10 different length bolts for no obvious reason. Transfer gear casing on a mini is a good one. It has both UNF and UNC (because some screw into ally and some into iron), and there are 3 or 4 different lengths! They could have just made them all UNC and the same length! They liked their UNF weld on nuts too, so fine a thread they either snapped or broke the nut of due to corrosion the first time you tried to undo them! |

When you say local garage do you mean LR dealer and/or were you buying genuine parts?
Aftermarket parts will often have a different coating to the original, however in this case I would agree that although FS10816L is on the parts catalogue as the correct part it has a yellow passivated coating. Equivalents to FS108161L but with the silver coating are: FS108166, FS108166M, FS108167PL. With any luck they are in price order but FS108166 may only come in a pack of 10. Washers: WC108057 and WC108056 appear thicker than WC108051 (but only going on small photos). Can't tell from photos which matches what is fitted nor which is the thicker, sorry. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Thanks Martin - the genuine fasteners I received are yellow passivated. On the one hand I thought perhaps the part has been superceeded, but there is no mention of this?

It is interesting that those part numbers all come back as M8 setscrews, whilst there is no doubt whatsoever that the screws I recently took off my 2007 110 (a) were not metric and (b) were the original.
The screws in place now are most definitely M8 and do the job perfectly. |

The (lightly) galvanised ones they supplied at the factory have probably run out and replacements are expensive. Someone probably just decided to buy in some cheap replacements.
Same thing happened when mini production ended, a lot of 'Genuine Rover' parts ended up being no better than pattern ones when they realised their suppliers minimum order quantities were no longer viable without a regular factory order once the existing stocks ran out they just bought in cheap after market stuff and put it in MG-Rover boxes. |
