Rear Crossmember bolt size
Hi All

Grinding down my rear crossmember to rustproof it.......Is it worth me taking out the rear crossmember bolts to achieve a smoother finish, or is that opening a can of worms? What size are they does anyone know

If my opinion and itโ€™s a very limited experience opinion you will be opening up a can of worms. I have a 2004 TD5 with no rust on it at all (which is rare). I removed the 5 bolts that holds the tow hitch on, I ended up only 1/2 undoing them, then the rusty threaded cut in and I broke off the thread behind 2 and broken the head off the other 3 of them. Itโ€™s been a lot of hassle sorting it out and had to abuse a friendship with a mate to help sort it!

An argument for removal is that you'll know the condition of a fairly significant part of your towing attachment. Do you want to tow not knowing the state of these bolts?

I maybe misunderstanding Johnnyd but is he talking about the bolts either end of the rear crossmember?

Surely they are the bolts for the seat belt mounts in the back? Plenty of release agent should enable them to undo so the rear cross member can be painted.

It is also a good idea to clean the inward face of rear cross member and flush out the internal bits prior to treating/painting all of the rear crossmember.

Indeed so Brendan, it is the 4 bolts you can see in the pic I posted, 2 each side, is anything likely to drop down if i do get them undone? I already have the tow bar off as you can see in the pic Very Happy

From memory I think those 4 bolts are for a couple of body supports on the rear tub. If you look in the wheel well you will see them coming down and see the bolts come through.

I, seemingly incorrectly, assumed you meant the three setscrews which hold the remaining part of the towing bracket in the photo to the lower face of the crossmember.

However my comment is still apt, would you want rear passenger unless you knew that the seatbelt mounts were sound?

I believe they are M10 x 110mm. Usually go through anti-crush spacers inside the crossmember.
