There's no chance that Land Rover will forget the purpose of a Defender. It has a specific use and so the new one will fit exactly into it's place, but will likely bring a range of modern improvements like passenger and pedestrian safety, economy and perhaps some creature comforts and less rusty build? One vehicle that's been overlooked in the list above, but has been modernised for safety regulations, yet still retains its traditional shape & modular options - is the Jeep Wrangler.
I'm thinking more of the SWB, 3 door manual. But its nice that removable doors, screen, top & fuel options are there along with air bags, electronically dis-engageable roll bars & auto box.

If the original land rover is replaced wholly.. its ta ta Tata. I'll either get some Wrangler or maybe a Disco 3 van. The latter, with options, could become an interim stopgap anyway.

Think of low pollution zones springing up as in London. How long before the goal posts are moved again & TD5s, then TDCis are banned. If Ford have gone 2.2 Euro 6 on Transits already, that is a warning IMO.

Elsewhere, 300 TDis are already silly money for such old vehicles.

Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

The Wrangler is one vehicle I often refer to myself. It is clearly identifiable for what it is, as a nice link with history, yet has been tastefully brought up to date and to fulfill current regulations, without really losing any of its capabilities. I think that would be a decent model for the Defender to follow.
