as if I recall Lucas/Rover Group recommend Panasonic CR2032's. Other branded batteries will probably be fine too, but Panasonic ones aren't expensive. (unless you get them from Land Rover Dealers)

Hmmm,

Been through this thread and several others now and can't get my 2nd fob to work.

I followed the whole instructions in the manual including switching the ignition to II and then back to 0, discharging, installing a new duracel CR2032 battery. From there I am clicking both buttons independently (4 and then more times), pressing and holding both the buttons together and nothing is happening.

Do I need to reprogram the key, if so, does that need specialist hardware?

press the lock button about 5 times in quick succession.

If that doesn't work, you'll need to check the Plip is actually transmitting. Most garages will have a universal remote tester, only takes 2 seconds to test.
If it's transmitting but not working, then you'll need to get the car reprogrammed to accept it.

Tried five quick successions, but alas no joy.

Looks like I am going to have to program a new key. What's the best way of doing this, main dealer or buy a diagnostics tool (a quick cursory search the lynx unit is over 200 quid).

Good question.

No (not with me). I recently bought the car and the chap who sold me it supplied two keys, one is working the other he believed had a flat battery as he had kept it in his kitchen drawer as a spare and it had been there a few years. So we can assume it worked at one time as there was no reason for the chap to state otherwise, but have never seen that with my own eyes so to speak.

Fair enough!

Rather than buy a tool (not all the tools will do 10AS programming I think) have you got a independent service place locally who would re-pair the keys?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Does the central locking work normally when you open the drivers door with the key? Is the red LED flashing on the dash? Just a thought, as I thought my key fob had a flat battery too and it turned out to be a blown fuse (F9 I think) due to a broken wire to a door lock actuator!

Hi Doc,

The key's not working at the moment Laughing

I need to un-seize the lock with some WD40 and then a bit of grease afterwards, The last owner never used the key, just the fob, so its' seized up in there and I can't get the key in yet - seems to be quite common with defender locks.

The central locking works with the single fob that I have, and the red light is flashing on the dash.

Ha ha😂 The same thing happened with mine and the lock - couldn’t get in it apart from through the back door, but we have a cargo barrier so I had to wait for Green Flag cos I was miles from home!

Good luck with the fob.

aren't the cargo barriers just removable from the boot. Mine is, you just have knobs which unscrew to remove either just the top half or all of it.
