Slow TD5
My TD5 currently appears to have a top speed of 76, I'm pretty sure this is lower than it used to be. Also seems a bit sluggish on hills.

Turbo actuator seems to work as expected and I've tried running without a MAF which seems to make no difference. I'm not getting any missfires or anything like that and having recently replaced most of the fuel system I can safely rule that out as the cause.

I suppose my question is, is this the normal top speed for a TD5? and is performance being the same with and without a MAF a sign that it's failed?

thanks in advance

Clean both the MAF and MAP and see how it goes. Wear gloves, keep it really clean and donโ€™t touch the elements. Leave to dry really well on a clean sheet of printing paper. A quality brake cleaner spray though should do the trick. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Might just be the hot ambient air temps we're getting. The standard intercooler will not reduce the temperature of the air passing through it sufficiently, that reduces air density going into the engine which, in turn means less oxygen in the cylinders so less fuel is being burnt.

TD5s seem to be particularly prone to this, especially with the standard intercooler. A bigger aftermarket intercooler can help. After upgrading ours to the biggest we could fit (allowing for our auto gearbox oil cooler) it made a big difference to the available torque, especially in hot weather.

Either that or just wait for the temperatures to drop and it'll be back to normal Smile http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

I don't think the hot ambient temperatures would make that much difference. When I went on family holidays in my parents '99 disco 2 td5 to Italy and back dad would hoon it on the italian motorways and it'd hold 90mph no problem fully laden. I know discos have a bit more grunt from stock and the different drive ratio but nothing seemed to slow that bus down.

Filter looks fine but I will swap it anyway and I ran it without the pipe to the wing but didn't make any diference

I've cleaned the MAP already but not the MAF so i'll give that a go

Red plug is clean, checked and cleaned a couple of months back while fixing another issue (injector harness replaced at that point as well) so all good on that front

I checked mine a while back performing similar steps to you and couldn't find anything obvious. I found the MAF made no difference if it was connected or not and I believe that indicates it's faulty but I wasn't sure.

Had diags fairly recently and nothing on there apart from the usual missing ABS etc, no engine light on. Where would I check for a blockage? I've had the inlet pipe to the airbox off and I checked the inlet manifold recently when I removed the EGR. Any other spots to check for a blockage?

When you say the turbo actuator seems fine, have you disconnected the actuator from the wastegate and check the operation of the wastegate? Iโ€™d recommend doing this, and ensuring that the wastegate is so free that it will return to centre on its own when released. Copious amounts of a decent spray oil and loads of working it back and forward should help.

Sounds like the symptoms I was having with a sticky wategate.

What did you end up doing to your wastegate Jon ?
Just spray it with lots of lube ?
