According to the fitting instructions linked to above, the green/white wire connects to the heated windscreen switch, so I guess it's this signal that's being detected. Dunno what you'd do if you didn't have a heated wind screen though, as the kit instructions would no longer make sense.
edit: ignore that - its the rear heated screen feed that it's shown connected to. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

The tow electrics relay doesn't use the engine running signal, it uses ignition (white/green). Any ignition switched source will do to trigger the relay.
The tow electrics wiring spec isn't for an engine running feed, it is ignition switched. Engine running used to be known as...... oil pressure switch The Puma cluster emulates an oil pressure switch to make the front screen timer (carried over from the Td5/RRC) work! 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

I expect if they have the wiring then the green white wire for the back of the switch is still an ignition live even if the relay and fuse aren't present. I'm guessing the fuse is just for the high load through the relay.

The dash switches are just a "convenient" (ha) place to pick up an ignition feed to tap in to. There is nothing special about the HRW switch being used.
The Puma cluster isn't hardwired to the alternator, it emulates the "engine running" signal based on what the engine ECU is telling it over CAN. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

dont mean to hijack but on the same end of the box i have a permanent indication of tow attachment, or the little tow light in the dash guy. i had assumed it was due to some bad wiring done by previous user but cant find anything.
anyone got thoughts on that? |

Check for corrosion in the towing socket on the back of the car. That can make your trailer light flash.

The trailer warning light isn't controlled by the trailer relay, it is controlled by the indicator relay (flasher unit).
As you have LED indicators you should have an LED-type flasher unit. I think these have an adjuster on them which you should adjust to stop the trailer warning coming on all the time. There are a few thread on here about this if you have a search 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |
