I'm not entirely sure what an RTT is, but for putting anything on a roof a couple of A-frames with a a block and tackle will do it. Depending on weight you can knock one up out of 4x2 timber. Either mount it on castors or drive the car under it.
If you have a high enough garage then you can put the block and tackle/chain lift on the roof joists if they're up to it. |

You could also obtain some scaffolding poles and clips to build a frame then use and electric or chain hoist from this.

We use an electric hoist mounted on a scaffold swing arm.
Whatever lifting mechanism you use you will need it mounted 4+m high. Could you mount such a system on the side of a building? One issue with lifting a RTT up is to get it level. Without building a frame to lift it up in, you will need two straps in one direction and another at 90 degrees to prevent it slipping out. What you do not need is to get the roof tent 2.5m above the ground for it to slip out and hit the deck. Depending on the roof tent and rack it may be easier to lift the rack off, mount the RTT on it and lift the job lot onto the vehicle. I have done this when it has been difficult to get to the RTT fixing points under the rack. Brendan |

Mobile crane is an ace idea - except..... well except for lots of reasons! Anyways, it made me smile. Thank you everyone for your input. I'm still thinking this through.

This is how we do ours..
Two straps and slide the tent up the straps to the roof, works when putting it on and taking it off. It helps that we have another Defender to use as an anchor. They are truck ratchet straps, using the ratchets at the anchor to adjust the tension. Click image to enlarge I also made a trolley to make moving it around and storing it a lot easier...
