On a trip Switzerland a few years ago in my series one, I stayed at the following sites - all nice and clean, cheap and a couple with small restaurants - ideal for a nice schnitzel!
From Rotterdam I drove down to Dahn (by autobahn) and stayed at: Campingplatz Büttelwoog - nice site surrounded by weird rock formations https://www.camping-buettelwoog.de/ From Dahn I went to Alpirsbach crossing the Rhine near Neuburg am Rhein on a small car ferry - https://www.rheinfaehre-leimersheim.de/ Then onto the campsite at Alpirsbach - https://camping-alpirsbach.de/ a friendly little site by a small stream - ideal for kids to play in. From Alpirsbach it was on to Switzerland and a site at Altdorf - http://camping-altdorf.ch/ again a nice site next to a swimming pool and a cable car service right up the mountains. The drive here is great too, with plenty of amazing tunnels and lots of blue lakes, plus the fantastic mountains. From here I drove through to Bierre for the event I was attending (we had permission to camp at a Swiss Army Barracks), but I have also camped at Interlarken or you could camp at Thun - both on route back through to France. As you know your way back through France I will leave that to you. Switzerland was interesting to drive through as it goes from German style to French style. All the above camp sites are small and pleasant to stay at. All distances were easily travelled by Series One Land Rover so not fast or far. If you are after some maps try the Michelin ones - 543 and 545 which have all the scenic routes highlighted. Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond..... |

That is brilliant. Thank you. The campsites look like they are just what we are after. Are there any areas of the Rhine or the Black Forest which are worth particular attention? Ive just ordered the maps and two lonely planet guides so they might answer this question anyway. Thank you so much  2002 110 td5 |

Lots of choices depending upon your route stop off preferences. Eifel, Pfalz, Black forest mentioned above good outdoors choices.
Dont forget when you enter Switzerland you will need to buy a vignette sticker (toll). |

Thanks for the kind comments - always happy to help. As Hendrix says there are other regions too, and the Eifel is very nice, I have stopped here before - the ablutions are amazing! https://www.eifel-camp.de/index_en.php and a very decent restaurant on site too - oh, and edited to add, only half an hours drive from the Nurburgring - ideal for any petrolheads!
You could also consider the Ahr Valley with loads of pretty little villages and plenty of wine, or the Mosel Valley, again with lots of little villages and again, even more wine! Have fun Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond..... |

Has anybody used this half fare card or know anything about it?
https://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard If my basic maths are correct, if we were to do two big tourist trips (Glacier express and Matterhorn cable car for example), we would save more than the 180 euro price tag for two adults as kids would go free, plus the 50% saving on the adult tickets. 2002 110 td5 |

Hi James , take a look at the Northeast of Germany. It's a quite a bit like the Lake District - small villages - lakes and forest - like jungle - eagles and waterbirds - very few population. Some former soviet tank routes which take you through the wilderness areas. Many regular dirt roads, too. Good place for 4x4 or short trips in paddle boats or even biking tours. Berlin is close (200 km). I can have you some recommendations for sites. Best - Julia |

Yes, Julia, e.g. the "Mueritz" area. Been there a fortnight ago  Lake-Distric-worthy rain included - almost got stuck in a suddenly very muddy forest track (normal road according to the sat nav)

I've just been having a quick look at that region. Thanks for the recommendation but I fear it will be too far north for us if we are going to fit in the rest of our journey within 3 weeks.
Maybe next year
Also, my kids are pestering me to drive the Defender round the Nurburgring. I'm well up for it but being a more rational adult, I am a bit more worried about getting a 911 up my back side at 120mph impact speed! I've seen videos and pictures of buses/minibuses and camper vans etc. going round but is this a little irresponsible? 2002 110 td5 |
