I have bought a Terratrip tripmeter, and need 2 "signals" for it.
1. a probe which i have to place somewhere, they suggest it should be mounted on a "non driven " wheel looking at a wheel bolt. (thats not possible on a 4x4 ) 2. Reverse signal (Can this be "picked up on the ECU under the seat" I actually also need this for my reverse cam |

What age is your defender? If it is a TD5 you could use the T014 speed probe which works with the electronic speed sensor on the td5 transfer box (6400 pulses per mile) which you can pickup at the ECU or behind the dash.
I believe the Puma engined vehicles use CANBUS for the speedometer so you might only be able to pick the signal up at the sensor directly on these rather than at the dash unless they only use the ABS sensors for speed signal. Easiest place to pickup the reverse light signal is to plug in directly to the reverse light switch on the gearbox under the centre seat/floor. You can easily run the cables through into the seatbox from here. Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Sorry the car is a TD5 from 1999.
I had a D2 V8 before and had the tripmeter pickup from the speedsensor, that posed as a challenge as it has e "keep a live" puls every second which means it "counts" even if the car is stationary.. So im not going that road again. @reol Yes i was thinking of that but i snapped up a Terratrip 303 at a bargin, and in a german og polish forrest the gps signal is very limited, and finding a sideroad within 10 m accuracy coud be a problem. @rallysteve Would the T014 work with the speedpuls without counting when stationary ? |

Not sure what the Disco II uses but the TD5 defender speed sensor is a mechanical affair with ignition live and a rotating disc. If no movement of the transfer box is happening (i.e. you are stationary) then there will be no speed pulse on the sensor wire. 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread

I have a Monit Q10 which picks up the pulse from the rear of the speedometer. Does not count when stationary. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top

Then that could be a neat solution. is there any "reason" not to take puls directly from the speed sensor ? 1999 TD5 "M2 Registered" 110" STW Dual Battery | 2DIN Radio | VW Touran Rearseats, 2" Lift | Polybushes | The Danish TurBus |

Not that i can see. Only reason would normally be that you will pickup additional distance from wheelspin but as you say the option to pickup a signal from a non driven wheel isnt practical on a permanent 4wd.
The only other options i can see would be a trigger wheel mounted to one of the propshaft flanges with a pickup but this would be a little exposed to damage. Alternatively you could put a sensor to detect the propshaft bolts (maybe on the front propshaft) . Both of these dont offer any advantage over using the speed sensor that i can see though. You can even connect it without modifying existing wiring using a pair of 3-way male/female econoseal connectors for the speed sensor and 2-way econoseal for the reverse light. You could even pickup the power and ground from the 3-way speed sensor connection. Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Nope, Pumas all the way to the end have a speed transducer hard-wired to the cluster. Not all Pumas had ABS 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Thanks for the clarification Martin , i wasnt sure what signals are sent within the CANBUS on the puma. I presume there is a roadspeed signal in the CANBUS but between cluster and engine ECU unless this is the simple square wave signal too?

Indeed, the cluster sends road speed messages out on the CAN bus. I assume it only does this on non ABS cars as the ABS module would do it otherwise. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I fitted a sensor to the back of the transfer box, and picked up on the propshaft. Description here:

Ended up buying Terratrips DualSensor Interface and mounting that behind the dash.
A "pig" to adjust, but once "caught" while driving it works like a charm. Still need to pickup the "reverse signal" 1999 TD5 "M2 Registered" 110" STW Dual Battery | 2DIN Radio | VW Touran Rearseats, 2" Lift | Polybushes | The Danish TurBus |

My (very old) Terratrip 1 has a switch to flick left or right to count up or down when going in reverse. Problem is I have to remember to flick the switch. It had never occurred to me to pick up a live feed from the reversing light to do this automatically. Very smart. It's not worth me doing brain surgery on a box of black magic electrickery to do that, but I've got a couple of buddies who are electronics gurus. I'm sure it would only take them 5 minutes. Thanks for the idea.
