PM Jellybean, he changed the 4-sp Ashcroft to the 6-sp JE Eng so would be able to comment on both. He's local to me in Suffolk so not far away from you, might be able to show you.
Might be worth the extra, from what I read. Try the search function on here as there are several threads on automatic conversions. Been thinking about the conversion for my 2.4. Went to Ashcroft as they have a demo vehicle you can drive with the Auto fitted. Did not have much time so only took it round the block, but I was impressed with the little time I drove it, planning to go back and give it a longer try, after all its a lot if you decide afterwards its not what you expected.
Interested in what you decide and others who have already done the conversion have to say. 2008 Defender 110 XS CSW Volvo S60 T8 Triumph 1200 Rally Explorer G0UBX |

I've had both conversions in my PUMA 90
The Ashcroft was perfectly ok, but quite noisy (IMO). The JE is what I have now - and its great. Quieter (it's a 6 speed) and to date (nearly 3 years) no problems. If I had to replace my Defender and was offered a vehicle with the Ashcroft conversion, I would certainly consider it. If I could ever afford the JE in a new vehicle again, I'd go for that. As such, either is good. Hope that helps? Mark |

Hi Mark, I totally accept this criticism, the 'noise' comes from excessive engine revs because of the torque converter being unlocked and slipping. One of the issues with the Compushift II control system that until recently we have only been able to lock the converter at a set speed, on a stock defender we set it to lock when in 4th at 56 mph. the problem with this is that if you are on light throttle its OK to lock in 4th at low 40's but the problem is that if you are accelerating hard and it locks at this low speed it drops the engine revs way too far down, hence we leave at at 56mph. the latest software which I have been testing on our demo car allows 2 things to improve this, A) we can now 'map' the lockup speed like the shift points, ie low throttle it will lock earlier and on hard throttle later, you can set the lockup speed for every 10% of the throttle position. B) we can unlock during the gear shifts, so we can now lock in 3rd on light throttle at 30mph, stay locked and shift to 4th without a hard shift, its hard to appreciate the difference until you are familiar with both setups but for me the car feels lighter and way quicker as you are using the early engine torque which you were revving past with the bonus of lower revving quieter driving. I would be happy to load this software free of charge for any of our customers that would like to try it or if you are not sure you can come and drive out demo 90 first. We will soon be moving to the Compushift 3 with bluetooth connectivity and remote access, very useful for diagnostics and updates. Dave Dave |

I don't have an automatic, but that is a great offer, credit to Ashcroft! James

My HP22/24 for my 4.6 came from Dave at Ashcroft, late last year, my experience was outstanding, great communication, quick delivery and a gearbox that transformed the way it drives.
I highly recommend them. |
