For years now I have paid for my no claims bonus to be protected in the event of a claim. It has become a habit which I had not really thought about. This time the young lady at the brokers asked why I was paying this and I gave the usual reply accidents etc etc.
She has informed me that it is true if I had an accident that my no claims bonus would be kept the same, but that my base premium could double or treble so I was therefore wasting my money. Being privileged enough to have 6 cars between Small and myself , the expenditure on this 'protection ' is not inconsiderable and this scenario is not what I had expected. It appears that my advancing years have instilled in me a sense of trust that should have been replaced with cynicism years ago. Just another example of why Insurance companies are all crooks. Happy to take your money but not so happy to pay out. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

It's a valid point but if you were to have a claim and lose your NCD you would be hit twice when it comes to renewal.
1) The base premium would increase. 2) You would have no NCD to use against this higher base premium You could have a scenario where you are paying £1000 gross premium at the moment which is reduced by 60% with your NCD to bring it down to £400 but say you made a claim and didn't have your NCD protected your base premium then doubled to become £2000 with no NCD to apply. You are then in a situation where had you still had your protected NCD you would still have 60% to take off the base premium bringing it down to £800.. I think the NCD is still well worth protecting 2015 Defender 90XS HT |

I have never insured my NCD (which is what protecting it amounts to) for precisely this reason. It has always seemed a scam to me.

it also depends on what your policy says they do in the event of a claim.
I had a claim about 10 years ago, I only lost my no claims bonus for a year, then it went back to what it was before. It's like small claims below lets say £500 over your excess, they're not worth making a claim. Because while the insurer will pay out the £500 without issue, the following year they'll likely put your premium up by £500 on renewal. |

do no claims really count? I went through some old paper work on sunday, Cleared a hell of a lot of old Bank statements and a few insurance policies. Laugh is what I am paying now for the defender, is exactly the same as I was paying for the 306 back in 2013! and the 306 is now gone back to what I was paying for the metro back then! so in a space of 5 years, everything has just came to a stand still and then jumped back up again. Peugeot has had a 20quid increase, from last year. The defender went down a little less, than quoted and that was only due me kicking up a fuss about the £20 increase on a car that's now retired as a daily! I’ve recently found that insurance quotes Vary wildly from the end of one month, to the beginning of the next!
Must be to do if they have had a bad or good month? Go try it. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Yes Ian, everything is driven by targets and bonuses in todays business world. I've found that the last working day of the month is the best time to do your final price negotiation. Even if they are above target for that month, some salesmen like to hold back your order for a day so they have a good kickstart for the next month. Defender 90XS SW
