Soldering a plug on wasn't an issue as I have a Yaesu FT8900 in the Defender which needs an N Type connector and all the kits come with PL259's fitted and I didn't want an adaptor on it. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

If you have a Roof Rack with a Ladder, bring it down the Ladder, through the Crossmember, there's a few spare holes and back inside using the Grommet which is used for the Lighting behind the Left Hand Speaker Closure.
Then up to roof level or along the floor. NormanD WE191

There is a small loom with 2/3 wires goes up the right hand windscreen A post, does anyone know if there are volts in it that would power the 2 radios, that would be quite neat, its behind the plastic cover that comes off easily removing two screws, thats where my aerial cables are also now.....

JD, yes WE191, I would be concerned running Radios from cabling which might not be rated to run extra radios.
Better idea is to run cabling, fuses and switches for the purpose. NormanD WE191

On mine both my HAM radio and cardboard box are fed from independent aux fuse boxes fed directly from the battery.

One is in the mud console with the CB and the other is under the passenger seat. Both are fed from a second battery so I can use the radios without having to worry about the engine starting (or not).

You also need some fairly chunky power for some HAM radios 15A upwards is not uncommon.

It also reduces the potential for introducing "noise" into the radios. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Yeh I thought that would be the case......ATM I am running of the cigarette socket as thats what they came with, but will run them direct via fuses from the battery at some point ......I like neatness though......

Hey Phil, can you supply a bit more info on the electrics? How have you cabled from the battery and how big is this additional fuse box?

The plastic facia in my 2008 CSW 90, is it safe to use self tapping screws for a mic bracket, or is it crowded with wires everywhere? or is there a more efficient not destructive way of securing the brackets?

Here goes with a sort of explanation of the electrics:

The Original battery has an additional positive connection which goes to a split charge relay and then on to the second battery.

The second battery then feeds a "blue sea" style 6+6 fuse box. One side fed straight from the battery and the other via an ignition fed relay (for heated seats etc).

The unswitched side then feeds the Ham radio on a dedicated 15 Amp fuse and the auxilary console with a 15 Amp fuse which powers the reversing camera and screen and CB.

There are more things on both sides but this is the important stuff.

What radios are you using if you don't mind me asking that already come with plugs on them? 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Thanks Phil, the dual band is a Leixen Chinese thing, but has some good reviews, its 25W max and has a cigarette plug on it, the other is just a 4W Albrecht CB so much less power.......

Similar Yes. The Same No.

I think I got mine from Simply Split Charge made (or at least labelled up) by Ripca. It seems to be a decent enough bit of kit and is about £30. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

For radios - HAM or CB it is good idea to use 2 wires (plus and minus) connected directly to the battery (not shared with other equipment), to reduce possible electrical noise, and both fused. Typically antenna has good ground connection and in case of some bad ground contact it is possible to get starting current through radio and antenna - probably with destruction of cables or radio. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Hey Phil, I like the idea of this split battery thing, been looking into it. Where have you located the second battery OOI, mine is a 90 so not much space, also where did you take the relay feed from to detect ignition on/off? If the radio thing is successful, I have an FT-100D I may use in the truck but would need a more secure/hidden install.
