No 1 daughter bought me for Christmas some nice looking Land Rover tyre valve covers. Tried to undo them to check the tyre pressures over the weekend and two of them had welded themselves onto the valves (the valves turned as I tried to use a 10mm spanner on them). Cost me £10 per wheel to get the valves changed!
Be warned and regularly lubricate them. I am back with plastic ones now!! Click image to enlarge Cheers Don. |

Mine had a fine white alumininium powder on them and when I used the dremmel to cut the ends off to get access to the valve I still could not undo them as they had corroded on to the thread. Cheers Don.

Yes known problem (often the hard way... ) dissimilar metals initially in dry close contact + water = corrosion

My last car had metal valve caps from new and they were always getting seized. I was reluctant to put any sort of grease on there as I didn’t want to any to get in the valve stem and cause a leak. Bog standard plastic is the way to go.
Incidentally, did you know that the valve cap is the primary means of sealing the air in? The valve is really only there to stop the air rushing out before you put the cap back on. I definitely read that somewhere, but don’t ask me to give a reference! It always bugs me when I see cars with valve caps missing since I read that. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

^^^^ Very true. I have these ones now and they do have sealing washers in.
And it is indeed dusinikarmstaks issue. Vale stems seem like brass? When it comes to a little grease your only talking 1/4 the size of a pea amount iff that. Also tyre pressures I check regularity so they won’t be much chance to corrode. I think the larger ones are worst because they are easily over tightened more. Each to their own but I’d rather have them over plastic, and definitely not go without! ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |

I'm afraid I must disagree, the valve cap is not the primary seal but is only a seal against ingress of dirt and dust. The primary seal is between the conical surface of the valve stem and seat. Some valve caps do have a synthetic rubber seal which helps prevent leakage which has already past the valve core but the prime reason for the rubber insert in the cap is to help prevent the dust cap coming loose. If you want to stand out of the crowds, get your tires filled with nitrogen, then you can put the telltale green plastic dust caps. Pretty special and won’t weld onto the valves. Did that with previous cars, but with the volume of nitrogen needed to fill Defender tires I don’t think I want to know what my tire shop would charge for that.

I've had great success inflating with a blend of 78% Nitrogen and 21% Oxygen with a few other choice ingredients making up the remaining 1% 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

You're telling me Eric, a few weeks ago I installed Dynabeads which needed tyre's completely deflating then re-inflating. Admittedly I've only got a cheapy compressor, but took ages and there is a huge amount of air in them. Even more so with the 255's I have and wider. It's no wonder they have such warnings on them (the tyre walls) about never over pressure setting beads etc. I am pretty sure they would do you serious harm should one explode and being in the vicinity.
