What was so difficult at JLR that they couldn't have created a successor to our beloved Defenders the way Merc have with the G Wagen? You'll never confuse it for anything else yet it is entirely new and meets all Euro criteria. Well done Merc

All very well but they have done it at a price, £143k! I'm still hoping the new Defender is NOT going to be in this price bracket.

Hats off to the G. A friend of my dad had one yonks ago to tow a horsebox, so I always did like them. I get the impression part of the issue is MB actually *want* to make them, and are clued up enough to know what customers want. That said, they are appealing to a different market with that price tag. Bin the crazy engine and the luxury stuff and I bet a basic model in workman mode would give JLR something to worry about. 2011 110 USW

I’ll probably get shot down here, but..... For me this is not a good precedent for the new Defender to aspire to. It’s a horrendously expensive SUV that no doubt is well made and nice to drive, but you won’t see it employed by expedition folk, humanitarian organisations, the military or utility companies. It is probably good at all those things, but the price and luxury trimmings mean it never will be. If you could afford one for that use, there’ll be virtually no one making off road parts and accessories for it anyway. The fact it looks like a G Wagon is irrelevant to me, in the same way I don’t really care what the new Defender will look like. It’s keeping the spirit and professional and enthusiast interest going that is important, and this doesn’t help that at all.
I’ll take all the above back if I’ve missed the bit that says Merc will be doing a nice basic version for £30k! 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

I thought more basic versions were available? At least fairly recently if not now? MB would be very clever to offer such a vehicle in the UK/Europe as a Defender replacement. I could see a G specced up for utilities work, and they are used in many European armies. 2011 110 USW

Saw half a dozen German army G wagons last week. They were on exercise on Salisbury Plain.

The old G was available in Australia as a ute. Not cheap but the right idea. No idea if there’ll be a ute of the new model. The U.K. is going to get a diesel but it will still be a luxury machine. The military Gs used abroad will be the the lure Steyr utility vehicles that I don’t believe were/are in general sale. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

New cars scare the bejeezus out of me. I just see unnecessary BS with the big tellies on the dash. Any car that's designed to look like there's an added screen looks totally naff to me.
Example : Click image to enlarge It's a good job really as I could never afford one anyway. Given the choice of this and the 70th.... I'd still go 70th. JLR must have had such a dilemma about where to market the new replacement, but after the 70th celebration video let-down, I've completely lost interest. Mrs G and I discussed actually going to put a deposit on one, but as it didn't appear, she's allocated funds back to a sporty car. |
