Bouncing speedo needle
When I try to cruise at 30mph my speedo needle bounces between 30 up to 40, and the engine sounds as though it is surging slightly, although the rpm needle stays solid. Does this whatever gear I'm in. I know my speedo drive was replaced due to it having a tacho fitted, but it has never done this so badly before. It usually does it after I have a decent run on a motorway then come onto a B road or whatever. The needle goes back to normal as soon as I accelerate up to 40, 50 or whatever.

Any ideas? 2011 110 USW

I presume this is your 2011 puma engined vehicle?

If so there shouldnt be any bounce with it being electrical. I would suggest a few simple checks if your noticing the sound of the engine surging as well. I would first advise checking your propshaft UJs are in good condition and that the UJ yokes are correctly lined up with each other at both ends of each shaft.

With my 200tdi old school speedo it does the same. I'm convinced that it's got a kink in the cable somewhere.

Yes it is my 2011 Puma. There is definitely a bounce, if it is electrically driven then obviously the impulses are somehow out of kilter. The surging is very subtle and only happens when the speedo is bouncing, the vehicle does not move any faster and the rev counter remains solid, but it is as though power is coming on and off very slightly. 2011 110 USW

Where does it pick up the speed pulse?

It'll either be a mechanically driven sender unit on the gearbox or it'll pick up the signal from an ABS sensor. Either can go faulty. Damaged wiring could also do it.

I believe it os off the gearbox but electronic or at least electro-mechanical. The pick up was replaced as part of the tacho installation, I still have the original one somewhere. 2011 110 USW

Hi
I have almost the same problem , I didn't solve until now as I am out of home from several months. I change already the speed sensor ., no result .
When I start the car , I don't have any problem with intermittent inductive load (AC & wiper) but when the battery is fully loaded the problem appear , that means when I have inductive load open , those create a surge it's look like a load dump , . Should it be a bad ground ? may be in the C0550 connector . I should investigate deeply as in this condition the car is not drivable.
Any idea is welcome ?

That ^^^ sounds horribly complicated.

I did notice on mine that there is no problem until the engine is thoroughly warmed up. I can't help think something is getting hot somewhere. 2011 110 USW

Have a look where your original sensor would be and there might be a short cable that goes to a tachograph kitas sender. The cables are prone for plying up and eventually snapping.

Where do I need to be looking? And why does it only happen at certain speeds and once everything is warmed up?

I did some testing today. After first setting off everything is fine. 25 miles up the motorway, turn off and the needle is up and down like a yo-yo, reading 40-50 when doing 30. Definite "on-off" feel of power through the engine, but rev counter remains static.

Coming home, I found if I cruise at 20mph there is a very slight wobble from the needle, cruise at 40 and it is fine. 2011 110 USW
