The distinction between a spot and a fog light is the beam pattern rather than the output.
I've no doubt that converting a spotlight to a side light can be done but it would involve rewiring the connector and finding a suitably low powered bulb or possibly a different bulb holder. You can't run a 65w side light. Why do you want to change it in that way? I'm looking to fit the SVX grill onto my TD5; I assumed the side light on an actual SVX is in the headlight
So in order to retain my existing headlights from the TD5 I'm looking to convert the SVX aux spot lights into side lights Hope that makes sense |

Wiring for side lights is already there as my TD5 has the side light in that location already

Ah, ok. To be honest, it would be far easier to swap your headlights for some that have sidelights built in than try and adapt the SVX spot lights. Darren

Not sure why you would want to convert your spots to sidelights unless you want it to look like a Volvo or Scania truck. It seems to be de rigueur for trucks to light up all of their spots with side lights. Defender 90XS SW

Converting any vehicle light to perform a different function is not legal. Vehicle lights which are approved for road use have a light function code on such as HCR (dip and main beam) F (Fog) A (side light) etc. There are various sub sets of light function code.
There can also be a minimum and maximum light output dependent on the light function. The reflector and lens will have been designed with the appropriate light source to fulfil a particular function. Changing the function of a particular light unit will invalidate the approval of the light. Brendan |

the headlights with built in side light are fairly cheap, I bought some by accident when upgrading from the early sealed beam units to the later reflector type.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-CRYSTAL-GLASS...XQBwlRSL9X You just need to run the side light cable a bit further over and splice into the wiring harness if you want to retain the original side light plug Far less hassle than trying to convert the SVX spot lights and potentially blinding everyone 2013 Discovery 4 HSE Lux | 2001 Defender 90 TD5 | 2007 Prodrive RB320 |
