When was the vehicle last serviced ? Black smoke is normally over fueling and there are a number of things it could be. Simple first check is the air filter, it may have got wet in the past and be restricting airflow. Also check the turbo actuator rod is moving, they can seize. Do a search of the forum and you will find advice on how to check it. Check under the drivers seat to see if a tuning box is installed, they normally just dump fuel and mess things up.

Thanks for the replies.
It was serviced last year apparently. I've fitted a new air filter a few days ago. There are no unexpected boxes of tricks under the driver's seat, and the actuator moves freely. I'm not convinced the actuator fully opens the waste gate though...need to take another look. I'm wondering if someone has been playing around with it. The MAF sensor looks clean, the air pressure sensor had oil on it but not a a lot. I'm going to check the turbo for play tomorrow, but it doesn't sound noisy. Is there anything else I should be checking? Your advice is much appreciated. I think I may order a Nanocom, no doubt I will be needing it again in the future. Thanks. |

Edit: Ignore.. Just reread the first post
Try unplugging the MAF and take it for a drive, the ECU should default to safe mode which reduces power which could corrupt the results. I believe smoke can be caused by a poor oxygen to fuel mix.. in theory if the MAF is faulty and overstating airflow then the ECU might be over fueling the engine.. |

My thoughts exactly about diagnostics. I’ve just ordered a Nanocom so, hopefully that will shed some light. I measured the resistance of the MAF sensor and compared it against a post I saw online. My sensor is well and truely , so new one is on order. Also got a new EGR gasket , so I will be refurbishing that this weekend, as well as a service. New MAP sensor ordered as well, as a matter of cause, but I will leave it at that until the Nanocom arrives.
I don’t think it’s enough smoke to fail the static MOT emissions test, but it is enough for me to be concerned. At least I will be able to check the ecu map soon and see if it’s been butchered. Failing that, I need a a compression test and a few prayers. |

You want to just bin off the EGR system. That causes more trouble, than it does any good. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

My concern about blanking the EGR is the MOT. I understand there are changes coming soon, which I've yet to research, but I've heard that egr deletes will fail (any info would be much appreciated).
Anyway, Nanocom is on it's way and I cant wait to hook it up. |

EGR is fine to blank, if anything changes in future it can be reversed anyway.
It's not like a one way street mod, you can fairly easily reverse it if needed. You really are best off with out it, it causes a whole heap of issues. Run some Millers diesel additive also, should help clean things up a bit also. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

The oil level isn’t high. I’m servicing it today so I shall see what state the oil is in when it comes out.
I haven’t noticed a diesel smell from the oil before though |

Quick update. Serviced it, no smell of diesel in the oil. The Nanocom unit arrived, noticed boost pressure was low. Took the inlet pipe to the turbo off and the turbo has excessive play on the shaft. Given the amount of play, I suspect that the oil seal will be damaged, which explains the blue smoke after it’s been idling for a while. Have ordered a recon’d unit which I will swap next weekend. Hopefully that will be the final thing now.
