Kitting out the rear of a USW
Hello folks,

Planning ahead a bit, I want to fit out the rear of my USW to make it as useable as possible and I’m looking for a bit of inspiration.

Thoughts so far include sound proofing, to tame its’ drum-like qualities, and probably a shelf between the wheel boxes. The stepped wheel boxes on these models are a lot less useful than the older design!

I see that LRI sell a carpet kit for the back of a USW but I wonder if anybody makes something similar to the rubbery material used in the front? Or even the old Hardura?

I like the idea of making the most of the lack of windows and I can’t help but think that the standard trims, taken from the regular station wagon, are more of a hindrance than a help. They’re quite bulky so I wonder if a set from an older model that aren’t so deeply moulded would fit instead? Alternatively, and more radically, what about ply lining? Has anybody done it, either DIY or with a kit?

I’d be interested to see what other people have come up with to make the most of the space. Darren

Hi Darren I play lined the back of the zepplin (a90) I used some foam backed aluminium foil similar to dayna mat on the sides first to reduce the noise as you say drum if you do ply line it dunhelm mill sell vynal fabric which I covered mine with prior to fixing it looks a BIT smarter  and is also wipe clean so helps when my filthy spaniel shakes himself inside the car  :dog:

Darren,

I recommend having a think about what will be the main use for your vehicle and then decide what modifications and accessories are useful for that purpose.

I have a 90HT which I bought used already ply lined. Last year I bought a set of MUD interior side panels...

https://www.mudstuff.co.uk/products/mud-st...anels.html

.....but never got round to fitting them. To be honest I found the ply lining so useful. I’ve decided to cover the ply panels with velour trim van lining material and sell on the Mud panels.

This is all part of a project I have just started on similar lines to yours. At the weekend I installed a MSS chest between the wheel boxes and have the MSS drawer unit to fit next. With those in place, there’s just enough room on the floor to accommodate the space needed for Tuff Trek rear door organiser that’s in my stash of project accessories.

I’ll be fitting twin 12V accessory sockets in the back. You can see the cut-outs I’ve already done in the photo below. These will be permanently live feeding from my aux battery. I’ll also kit the usual 12v socket in the rear OS lamp housing running off the “purple wire”.

I’ve thought about one of those Load lugger type shelves. Although mantec are no longer around to supply them, Flatdog have jumped in to fill the void. I like the look of theirs but will wait to see what they look like fitted before I commit. Fortunately there’s an open day coming up at Flatdog that I intend to visit.

The bulk of my project is electrical. Besides the sockets, I’ll also be adding additional interior lighting for the load space, making and installing a loom to power rear work lamps and roof rack mounted driving lights. The cables will all run within domestic box section mini trunking hidden behind the ply lining as will the antenna coax feed lines for my CB and amateur radio.

Hope that gives you a few ideas to consider.

I got my 110 fitted out with a load space liner designed for a 90, a genuine L.R. Part.
It obviously covers the bottom but also goes up and around onto the top of the wheel boxes and is one piece so keeps any spills and crap safely enclosed.
I also fitted the Mud Infill Panels and think they are great, comes with its own sound deadening insulation and once fitted not only look good but protect the body from scratches and the bonus is the cargo nets give more storage space.

Oh, trust me I do. I think of it as a bit like Thunderbird 2, in that it can be adapted for whatever purpose is required!

It's interesting that you say that. I, too, have looked at the Mud panels but, apart form the cost, wondered if there may be a better way, hence this thread.

By chance, I've got a couple of those Discovery 12v sockets stashed away, too. In fact, a lot of what you've described is on the cards for mine, having recently completed a similar arrangement for my 90.

Hmm, the more I think about it, the more I'm taken with the idea of suitably covered ply in place of the slightly pointless existing trims. Darren

Thanks for that. I must admit I imagined the ply continuing down to cover the join between the top and tub as there looks like plenty of fixing opportunities. How's yours fixed along the bottom edge? Darren

Thank, Bob. How close a fit is the 90 load space liner? Darren

I would be tempted to cut them in line with the cargo barrier. So you still retain the nice bits either side of the rear seats. I didn't bother on mine as it already had some carpet covered ply panels in the 'window' recesses.

Mine was already factory carpet lined over the arches, and I glued some sound deadening and matching carpet onto the insides of the rear quarters to finish it off.

I've got the Mantec top storage bins and cross shelves fitted. I've also got their high mounted shelf. The high shelf is great for storing things like coats etc on.

I didn't go to the bottom as I have a set of county seats I might fit to fix the bottom edge I used some 90 degree brackets from the joints shop

Hmm, I'd have to think about that. I'm not sure that I'd want to cut up the existing trims and I suspect that getting a neat join would be difficult anyway. Darren

I’d looked at this too for mine, the reviews were a bit “M’eh” of the kit though.

This is how the ply all fits together in my 90.

It’s a very good fit.
