2015 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 Adventure Phoenix Orange
Hello CR,

I am a bit confused - has all of this rust just suddenly appeared over 6 months - your older comments were about amazing quality and lack of issues etc etc. Was it ever undersealed? Is your car cover breathable? I also have an Adventure and found some rust inside - I think its primarily from condensation as have managed to stop the ingress leaks. Over winter months, I put in bags of silica gel in the footwell which seems to help (stops condensation on inside of screen anyway). I agree with your comment about not much point detailing etc, as poorly built so rust will appear regardless and spoil any 'immaculate look'. I just accept it as very primitive design. I hope you get it sorted. bw jerry

Primitive design but not a primitive price, still there is no excuse for bad quality other than complete contempt for your customers.

I was told by my dealer today that LR are not interested in ANY warranty claims for the presented problems Shocked

Any one interested in a class action law suit against LR ???????

CR that’s such a shame. I followed your thread with regard to this Defender and it looked amazing and I remember you singing Trinity Motors in Wexford, can they not do anything to persuade JLR to do the work under warranty? 2015 HT XS 90

I asked the dealer principal who I am friendly with as we share another interest do LR care if I take legal action against the garage as that is who my contract is with. The impression I got from him was that they could not care less and are quite prepared to hang them out to dry and leave them responsible. One funny thing is he mentioned the other shared interest manufacturer that we both purchase from and what their customer service would be if there was a problem. It would be at the other end of the spectrum in the way they do business but they are Swiss!!.

So it look like my choices are

Put up and shut up. Evil or Very Mad

Hand the keys back and then take legal action which no doubt LR would be happy to spend mega bucks on to defend their good name Rolling with laughter maybe thats why it was clalled the defender as some ironic joke, as they would spend its life defending their ridiculous position of what they think is acceptable quality.

Get the garage to try and sort the issues, not sure that would be successful. Rolling Eyes

Get it a new owner.

Answers on a post card please ?..... Confused

In my experience, some dealers want warranty work, others don't. Recently, my usual contact for service admitted they were happy for me to have my mot carried out elsewhere, as the £54 odd quid didn't cover their hourly rate. How revealing I thought - most of the service is "inspect" and covers the same elements of the mot, surely a saving for them. And yet the day before the service, when I said I'd mot'd it beforehand, there wasn't enough time in my allocated appointment for them to inspect/investigate a couple of additional warranty items I then mentioned, eg. Readily visible things like oil leak from rocker cover and leak from expansion tank lid... They just don't want the work. As I understand it, land rover have a "menu" of times allowable for the usual items, maybe there's not enough margin for the £80/hour outfits dealing with customers with deep pockets.

When I have found a willing dealer/authorised repairer, in my experience the bolt on bits (mud flaps, steps, towing eyes, etc) and bodywork are no problem, but apart from painting the rear cross member, the chassis is a no go area. As a result of this experience, I have made exceptional efforts to immediately wax/dinitrol the chassis and axles of our last five defenders and not bothered with "the usual warranty items".

Try another dealer. Your water ingress and rusty slam panel are definitely valid warranty items. Push them on the axle corrosion or just get an independent specialist to prepare and protect the bits land rover aren't interested in. Current Steeds:

doublea, funny I see you have an 888, I had new one in 94. Ducati at that point were meant to be quite troublesome. I had no issues, rust or engine. Here I am nearly quarter of century later having to put up with this nonsense over rust.

Bottom line is the dealer is not qualified to rebuild the car.

I just copied the section below from the adventure sale brouchre " corrosion resistance " what a shower of c88ts

All Land Rover Approved Accessories fitted by a Land Rover Retailers within one month or 1,600 kilometres/
1,000 miles (which ever occurs first) of the handover of a new registered vehicle will benefit from the same warranty terms and period of cover as the vehicle warranty. Accessories purchased outside of these parameters will be subject to a 12 month unlimited mileage warranty. All Land Rover Approved Accessories are rigorously tested to the same exacting standards as those applied to our vehicles. Performance in extreme hot and cold temperatures, corrosion resistance, impact and airbag deployment highlight some of the exhaustive product testing carried out to ensure accessories are both durable and importantly, continue to comply with current legislation.

During my factory tour, the guide was extolling the virtues of the laboratory clean, hermetically sealed, computer controlled robot spray building, where people were not even allowed in. So I said, what about defender chassis then? He just smiled wryly. Rolling Eyes Current Steeds:

So quick update JLR are refusing point blank to do anything about the corrosion

This is going to be fun, below are the basic eu law guidelines

If something does go wrong with a car you have bought from a dealer, you are protected by consumer legislation. Under the Sale of Goods and Associated Guarantees Directive 99/44/EC a car must be of satisfactory quality, as described, and be fit for purpose. This legislation will apply whether or not you have a guarantee or warranty. Contact the seller to seek a remedy.

It will be as simple a, does the judge think the state of my car is "satisfactory quality" for product of its price and age.

Any one want to come along for the ride?

out of interest, have you checked the 2nd row seat bases? You can see their corners from the rear / boot area. I have small patches of rust, but yours does look pretty advanced. Are you sure that car cover was breathable? - maybe you inadvertently created an (even worse than normal) damp microclimate.

just checked the 2nd row seat bases and they are perfect. The car cover was only used when I was going away during the summer for a couple of weeks and it is breathable so I don't think we are going to be able to blame it.
