Peak classic in 2030
Interesting view in this article that 2030 is 'peak classic' i.e. millenials aren't particularly interested in cars let alone classic cars, and by 2030 the older members of Generation X will be 70 and starting to sell their classics. But who will they sell them to? My maths isn't great but 2030 is only 12 years away.

The ban on new petrol and diesel cars in 2040 will also impact the market. I wonder if it will become socially unacceptable to have a petrol or diesel car as a daily driver? Running a classic car to a show / village fete on high days and holidays might be about it?

It is interesting to consider that when leaded petrol was phased out, owners of classic vehicles were given assurances that it would remain possible to buy leaded for vehicles without hardened exhaust valve seats for the foreseeable future. Bet you can't find a practical source of leaded now, though.

So I wonder for how long after the prohibition of new diesel or petrol cars will affordable fuel remain available?

To my simple mind fuel prices should drop if the demand has been curtailed. I appreciate OPEC has managed to maintain prices at a level for years but with far less demand the commodity should be worth less. No?

There will still be demand for fossil fuels to run all the generators/electricity stations to produce power to charge the batteries.

Also it is only the UK doing this re banning new car sales if they run on fossil fuels. We are a minute proportion of the global market for fuel

Cannot see prices coming down by a great deal (which probably means they will)

So the problem is young people aren't buying cars. Neither are they buying houses, alcohol or a record/cd collection these days.

I hope you are right, but I am not sure as the outlets for Diesel and Petrol diminish, the price will more than likely rise.

It's something I haven't thought much about, but a good discussion to have and it will be interesting what the poll results finally show Thumbs Up

Development of the electric truck is way behind that of passenger cars so I suspect diesel fuel will be available long after 2040. Ships will continue to use diesel power well beyond 2040 so I cannot see problems in owners of classic vehicles obtaining diesel fuel for many years. Plant equipment will still require both petrol and diesel. It will be a long, long time before hydrocarbon fuels become extinct although they may become extremely expensive. Defender 90XS SW

My nephew and niece, and some younger friends have no real interest I cars (compared to myself and my friends and 16-15 years old). It's just a vehicle to get you from A to B. No real interest at all. No real interest in owning and maintaining a car/motorbike. It's a disposable, amazon/google/apple/facebook society now!
So different to my generation where we all ached for cars, saw cars and motorbikes as "freedom" and an extension of our persona. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Exactly that- car equalled freedom from bus / bike / parents. I loved my 1979 gold mk2 escort 1.3GL, the joy of rear wheel drive in the wet.... awesome.
