I took a punt on an ebay bike carrier - a Pendle towball mounted one. Unfortunately, the offset on the bars isn't enough to clear the spare wheel on the back door and I was looking at ways I could adapt it to fit elsewhere. There is another version of the Pendle with a bigger offset, but towing with bikes mounted wouldn't be an option unless the towed caravan or trailer had a long draw bar with no jockey wheel.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows of a roof rack mount that projects out the rear? Getting bikes on top of the roof rack is a bit of a problem on account of the height. But a rear projecting one would avoid having the weight of the bikes on the spare wheel and with the bikes high up, it may be possible to tow a trailer or caravan. Obviously, the rear door wouldn't open with the bikes in place, but that would be the same with the Pendle type. Something like this, but not using broom handles! You can buy extenders that fit between the bike rack and tow bar, can't think what they're called now.
