This popped up on the wife's FB feed and I thought it looked really good. Especially like the roofbox look closed and how quick to set up. Like the idea of this and an ostrich wing on a rack for quick getaways.
Does anyone have any experience with them? http://www.ikamper.com Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Please excuse the Jeeps James MY2012 110 2.2TDCi XS SW Orkney Grey - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic43410.html MY1990 110 200TDi SW beautifully faded Portofino Red - https://www.defender2.net/forum/post743641.html#743641 MY1984 90 V8 Slate Grey - https://www.defender2.net/forum/post744557.html#744557 Instagram @suffolk_rovers Last edited by JOW240725 on 18th Apr 2018 1:30pm. I love it! It is so easy to set up and put away. The tent itself takes 30secs, even with the annex its only 5-10minutes. I haven't played with it much yet but will be interesting to see how much bedding can be left in it. I suspect we'll also improve the mattress. It seems the addition a memory foam mattress topper is a popular improvement.
I'll be interested to see how you get fitting it. The fixing channels on the tent run front to back, the same as the Hannibal rack. Unfortunately for me, the spacings don't work out. If the Skycamp channel falls between rack slats it will be fine, you can just clamp to the cross bars. On the Hannibal the channels sit on top of the slats with the fixing bolts right on the edge. You can in fact just about fit the bolt at the back but the channel isn't parallel so it clashes at the front. Being right on the edge also means you can't drill thru the slat. For the time being, I've just used roof bars. The Defender roof being so high you might need a step to open and close, but it's easy enough. I suspect the annex has been designed for a lower roof but it still works on the Defender and doesn't look too bad. Eventually, I'll probably mount it on our camping trailer so we can drop, set up camp and still drive away. But want the option to easily fit on the Defender for quick overnight trips. There is a sequence of things you need to remember when putting it away, remove strut clamps, open windows (lets air billow out), hold on to the closing strap, it's easy enough but I've yet managed to remember it all! I look forward to seeing yours mounted and being used! Are you collecting from Felixstowe? If so, you can call in for a cupper on your way past! James

Good to hear - thanks for the pics as well I’ve got the annex room same as you, and I’ll have the fox wing awning on the other side.
The mattress seems to be a common complaint, hoping like you I’ll be able to fit in a topper as well as my bedding. I’m getting mine delivered to my house tomorrow - the only collection I was offered was from Scotland and I couldn’t be bothered! I’m sure there’s a way to make it fit, i’ll let you know, my rack isn’t Hannibal but very similar. I’ll be at adventure overland with it next weekend if you’re going? |

Ah you must be getting it from Andy Warder, that's good. As you probably read I got one 2nd hand but saw Andy at the Camping and Caravanning Show and he was very helpful.
There will be a way of fixing it to the Hannibal, I just haven't investigated too far yet. I'm also keen to keep it as low as possible so trying to avoid the obvious option of another cross rail on top of the rack. You'll see how it fits with your Tempo slats. It will fit it just depends how easy! Can't wait to see photos! The previous owner installed carpet tiles to the base to reduce condensation, made a really good job of it. I'll be interested to hear how you get on with the annex. The spike of the pole goes thru the inner canvas but not the flysheet and it seems to me as if it will eventually make holes in the fly (already got a small tear), we've put caps on the ends of the spikes at the moment. I might punch an eyelet in the flysheet so it goes thru both, that way it will locate a lot better. I want to get some extra poles to hold up the doors for additional undercover. I'm still saving for a Fox wing, it'll be the perfect match with the Skycamp on the driver's side. The trouble is I like the look of the self-supporting ones which are mucho money. Unfortunately I don't think I'm going ot make to to the Overland Show. Have a great day. Well it’s arrived and it’s on the roof.. I fully understand your predicament now with regards to the horizontal slats!
I will ponder this issue over a few beers |

Typical! Does it sit on top of the slats?
Can you just drill thru the slat? I considered relocating the runners on the Skycamp, it only bolts thru the honeycomb base, but I was worried about weakening the base. The obvious thing is to bolt a cross rail to the runners then clamp that to the rack, but I wanted to keep it as low as possible. I'll be watching with interest. I'd love to meet up but I'm only there on the Saturday
You're only round the corner anyway - you can come take a look at the 130 and tent some time? |

Tent is fitted
In the end I took the two rails off the bottom, cut them in half with a hacksaw and remounted them width-ways, then used the standard mounts provided. I reused the existing holes for the middle two slats but had to drill new ones for the top and bottom slats as there are a few nuts and things that get in the way otherwise. Slats: Click image to enlarge Fitted: Click image to enlarge And with annex room: Click image to enlarge There's a few more pics over on my 130 thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic60113-45.html The tent is now a permanent part of the car as far as I'm concerned, fitting it was an absolute nightmare and I'm never doing it again |
