Trailer Insurance
I've just received a renewal quote for insuring my Ifor Williams HB511 horse trailer. It has gone up by 21% from last year. Can anyone recommend an insurance company or broker? I am wanting to insure against fire, theft and accidental damage. Your recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Defender 90XS SW

We have found them to the cheapest year on year, excellent service. We do have the horse insured with them as well and they have been first class on that too. 2015 HT XS 90

Interested to follow this.

We tried NFU to insure our horse trailer with NFU and was told that we have to have the vehicle 🚗 insured with them to get trailer insurance Shocked The Defender premium with NFU was twice that of APlan so that was a no go. We even have the house insured with them for over 15 years but that doesn't seem to matter either.

I so want to use NFU as there insurance is first class, but they just can't compete on what I consider should be bread and butter for them, Defenders and Horse's. Shame. Crying or Very sad James

James, I also had my horses insured with NFU and my equine vet swears by them saying they hardly ever argue over claims for veterinary fees. I only ever made one claim for veterinary fees and they met all of them including my claims for mileage for taking one of my horses to and from a veterinary hospital. Unfortunately their increases in annual premiums made it totally uneconomical for me to stay with them.

One of my neighbours with a 500 acre farm has the whole of his farming business including buildings, livestock and machinery insured with NFU but has his horses insured with another provider as they were forever increasing their premiums and eventually like with myself priced themselves out of insuring his horses.

I'll see what they come back with as regards my horse trailer. Defender 90XS SW

After lots of shopping around I went back to my original broker and asked him to reduce the price if he wanted to retain my business. I told him at what price level he needed to be at. He came back with a price that actually undercut last years price by £12 which when compared to his 2018 quoted price, was a saving of £43. Result. It pays to shop around.

Every time I get an annual renewal notice, not just for insurance, I shop around, it's amazing what reductions you can get by just a few phone calls. Defender 90XS SW

It has to be the latter - the loyalty premium model to subsidise new customers seems to be fairly widely adopted across the insurance market.
