Bilstein b6
Im thinking of upgrading my suspension. I see you can get a package with ride control for over £1000 or you can just buy separate dampers for around £500. What would I miss if I dont get the full package? I mean it's twice the price. Anyone know?

Would I notice a big difference to the standard ride with this upgrade? Is there anyone who knows about that ride control. Is it worth the extra money?

I saw some Bilstein B6 "Bowler tune" shocks up for sale, so I did some research to discover they were asking silly money.

A set of 4 standard Bilstein B6 are £260 from Paddocks or ride control for £1074. The ride controls appear to let you change from 'standard' ride to 'sports' by the press of a button in the cab.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has it?

They are also selling a Bilstein B6 - Performance Rear Gas Shock Absorber from XA159807 for £10 per shock more. I don't know what the difference is?

Personally, from what I read when mine needs replacing I'll be going Bilstein B6 with OEM springs and uprated ARB. I'll sound like my Dad but can just see the 'ride control' is another thing to go wrong! Confused James

Actually my 110 td5 had Bilstein b6, and it felt great. But it came with that so never had the chance to feel the difference. I think I couldnt care less about ride control. I mean I thought the driver controlled the Defender anyway so why brother. Seems like no one else knows about it.

Koni, nope. Could always check it out. Will go for standard springs.

I fitted standard Bilstein B6 gas shocks front and rear bought from Paddocks and the improvement in ride comfort over standard shocks was very noticeable, so much so I would never go back to standard For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Now fitted over four years and still look as good as the day they were fitted. The ride is still the same without any noticeable difference even though I do a fair amount of caravan and horsebox towing. The yellow finish must be a very tough coating as I have not coated it with any rust proofing just the odd blast with the pressure washer now again. Unlike a car, you cannot do the bounce test with a Defender but I am convinced the shocks act as good now as when new after four years. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Given Bilstein's reputation you'd have to say they should last as long as (or outlast) any OE fitment. Given normal usage etc etc Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

I hadn't noticed until now but you're right, there does seem to be a fairly large difference in pricing! I was looking at buying from alive but they want £366 - nearly £70 more than it would cost from paddock for those from XA159807 ones Shocked

as for the second hand ones... makes sense just to buy from paddock doesn't it? Unless there is a difference between these B6 that I'm missing?

The Alive B6 Kit for £366 inc VAT includes a steering damper, which makes them good value, if you want the damper of course. James
