importing defenders 110 pick up
hi guys/ladies

Just wondering has anyone imported a defender 110 dual cab pick up/utility from the UK to Australia. I'm thinking of getting one while I'm living in the UK and have always wanted one so was thinking of taking it home with me when I leave. I know you can already get 110 single cab and wagon defenders in OZ but I haven't seen any 110 dual cap utilities.

Now not that I would actually sell it when I get home ill keep the thing till it dies or out lives me. But what kind of cost am I looking at? has anyone got one back in OZ? is it worth the money? is insurance costly? has anyone had any unforeseen problems?

Not looking at vintage/older one thinking maybe a 2007-2010 PUMA TDCi

(mainly need reasons to convince the wife to let me do it)

you'll need to check it will comply with emissions regs (probably will) and what the import duty and VAT (if any) is. Then shipping (about £1k). Check parts availability or be prepared to wait for some to be shipped over if you need specialist bits that aren't available there (not likely to be a problem). Overall, not difficult to do. Whether financially viable is another issue..... May be cheaper to see if there's one more local to you (NZ, perhaps, if you're going to Aus and can't find any there).

We have temporary imported a Defender into Australia. First thing to consider is that any vehicle entering Australia has to be cleaner then clean. Think factory clean, no dirty recovery gear etc

Am not aware of RoRo vessels from U.K.to Australia for private individual use. A 20' container to Australia would cost a few thousand £

You will probably be liable to custom and GST on entering Australia. Unless you are VAT registered in U.K. The chances of getting any VAT back is slim.

Chances of finding someone in an Australian insurance/vehicle registration/MOT who understands personal imports is also slim.

My advice would be to seek information on the AULRO forum and find out if anyone there has done a personal import of a second hand vehicle. They were helpful to us when we did a temporary import.

It reminds me of the time I got stop by the police in Sydney and asked for the rego and they got completely confused when I pointed to our tax disc, the registration number also threw them as we have one letter/digit more then Australian ones.
