Similar problems on mine recently. Though mine is much older. Turned out to be a short inside the indicator switch blowing the fuse. Had to change the switch but been OK since. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

check the hazard switch, as that can cause problems, and also whip off the coweling and have a check for any earth leaks on the stalk. My dad had replaced both, and managed to snip the earth wire, which was shorting out the full system. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

If you have a tow socket check the plug or wiring isn’t at fault

OK so did lots of tests today but still no resolution!!
I have done the following:
So clues on what to check on the right hand indicator circuit? Last edited by dnorrishill on 8th Apr 2018 6:53pm. Edited 1 time in total |

On my Jeep I had an issue with the indicators. The culprit turned out to be a tiny hairline crack on the relay connection. Used a tiny bit of solder and it never came back so might be worth doing an inspection of that.

So I give up - any recommendations on who I can get to try and trace the problem?!?
Spoke to my local independent today who said I was better off taking it to a auto electrician (and recommended one in Southampton). Spoke to my local garage who service all makes of car and are very good - they will take a look but will give no guarantee. So I withdraw my life savings and take it to local Land Rover dealer. Or... I even considered one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Power-Probe-ECT20...B000P6UO2I - could sell on ebay afterwards I guess - probably cheaper than LR! |

Right if I've understood this correctly - when you connect +12V (permanent supply) to the circuit for the right hand indicators you blow the fuse? Even with the indicator bulbs removed? Realistically that means you have a short to ground on that circuit - possibly a chafed wire. I don't know if the newer Land Rovers are the same but my 300Tdi has inside the engine bay on the drivers side of the bulkhead gearbox tunnel a set of three connectors - these provide the connections to the chassis loom for the rear lights etc. Note - on mine much easier to access from lying underneath and they're above the bias junction for the brakes. Of course a TDCi probably doesn't have this layout. If you have something like this you can disconnect them and isolate the front from the rear. If you get the same result from the test then you've at least narrowed it down to probably the front half of the wiring loom. If you've got a link to a wiring diagram I can probably be of more help. You're not far from me so could possibly meet up and help out. Not as if I don't understand electronics - currently sat in an electronics lab waiting for some tests to finish on a PCB I designed... Ed

sako243, thanks very much for the info and kind offer of assistance. Also sorry for delay in replying, for some reason your reply did not show up on the new posts list!
As you suggested the problem was a chafed wire on the wiring loom running to the right front wing. Persistence was the key, following the path of the wires and looking for points where the loom could rub on something! |

So the problem was where the wiring loom was snaked around the abs unit pipes and the aerial. The wires were pretty tight and had rubbed through the insulation on one of the metal pipes causing the short.

No worries - glad you found it.
Electrics / electronics conceptually are quite simple - it's just that lots of things tend to happen simultaneously meaning it's completely incomprehensible That being said even a TDCi electronics are simple. Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

@dnorrishill, thank you!! I had the exact same issue on my Defender. I was searching around trying to find the fault for ages but my wires had rubbed through exactly as you described!
