France 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Corris Grey
RAF - 100 years
Happy Birthday to the RAF. Many thanks for all the effort and support over the past 100 years from all the servicemen and women, past and present of the world's finest air service. I was fortunate enough to experience and benefit from their exemplary skills and dedication on many occasions. Nothing short of excellent. Good luck for the next century of national service. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

We still have my grandfather’s WWI RFC jacket. He kept his RFC wings and still wore the tie even after it became the RAF.

Just thinking about it is making me think I might reach for a few of my old Biggles!

Father-in-Law was ground crew with 609 in WW2, his mother bought him a Scott on condition that he would'nt join up. He promptly rode off on it and joined up. Before that Grandad was with 30 squadron RFC in Mesopotamia & Egypt. He made this clock, a photo frame and a cigarette box from what we believe was the broken prop from a crashed Bristol Fighter. We're not sure if the clock also came from the aircraft or from the dashboard of a later motor-car. I think they had a Lagonda which was used for carting their show-winning Gordon Setters around but was eventually crashed.
Anyone recognise the clock? It's a Smiths.

My Grandfather was an officer in 30Sqn RFC in Egypt (not sure about Meso) Thumbs Up
We have a photo of a crashed Bristol but it wasn't a fighter but the two seater recon plane. Mind you, I think they crashed a lot in those days Whistle

Sorry but don't recognise the clock. New project and it's green: www.projectoverland.info

I will have to find out which squadron my grandfather ended up in. He was in the Royal Scots Fusiliers at Gallipoli and decided that flying looked much better. Lucky for him he ended up going back to Palestine but I know he spent time in Egypt too.

We have a few photos as well as one with all (or majority) of the RAF planes gathered together at an airfield somewhere in the Middle East at the end of the war.

Anyway happy birthday to the RAF and my greatest admiration for all who have served in it.

By the way, great momento David. Something to treasure forever.

Reminds me that a few years back my parents - who collect antiques - found a silver salver at a shop. Looking at it they found an inscription on it to a senior RAF individual from his men at the end of WWII. Basically it thanked him for his leadership and getting them through it safely etc.

Coincidentally this person was a friend of my parents before he passed away and was also reasonably famous during the war. My parents bought it on the spot and then called his family as they thought it must have been stolen.

Turned out that his family had sold it!

I am being pretty careful not to identify him and I know people don’t always treasure these items.

But personally I would never let them go.
