1993 Defender 90 300 Tdi CSW Barolo Black
Buckers' 1993 300Tdi
Having been a long time lurker on here I thought it was probably time I start a thread documenting the changes I've made to my 300Tdi 90. It was purchased in 2016 for me to learnt to drive in and although it was a learning curve at the beginning I now can't think of driving anything else. It was pretty standard to begin with, it just had a cubby box and BFG Mud Terrains. It stayed mod free for a while, the only thing that was changed was the water pump which decided to cease functioning.

After a while I had an itch to scratch so I bought a pair of bucket seats from PowerfulUK and I can't rate them highly enough. They're super comfy and were very well priced.

That started a spiral as it often does so I got in contact with a local land rover specialist and a whole heap of work was scheduled in for whilst I was away at uni. The list now isfairly lengthy but it stared out with;

Full width allisport intercooler
disco transfer box
forward facing rear seats

But as these things often go, it grew rapidly. The mainsheet from the gearbox was very worn and was likely to fail soon so a new gearbox was fitted, then I decided to make get some carpet for the rear. As it stands the gearbox and transfer box have been changed. The intercooler and carpet are on order so it'll be going back in to have those fitted.

Then sitting at home awaiting my return there's a LED wipac light kit, x5 BFG all terrains, mcb4x4 roof rack and a few other bits all waiting to be fitted. It's also off to Urban Automotive at the beginning of may to have the windows tinted.

In due course there'll be some black modulars on order for the new tyres but that'll come in due course.

So what started off as a few changes have resulted in a new transmission and whole host of other probably completely superfluous things but thats what its all about isn't it?

Anyway, it's being collected tomorrow with its new transmission and then I'll be back home for a while to inevitably spend more money.

I'm looking to get some replacement modular rims but the offset is troubling me. Will ET-35 make the wheels stick out too far past the arches? Ill be running BFG AT 265 75 16 and want to add a bit more of a stance to the car but I fear ET-35 will make them stick out too much.

I've run a search but can't find anything definitive. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Matt

Standard LR 7 inch wide alloys have an offset of +33, so -35 is going to be nearly 3 inches further out!

A common choice are wheels with zero offset and modulars should be available in that configuration. Darren

Nice looking 90!

You should notice a difference with a full width intercooler but remember there's a lot of things to tweak on the 300tdi to get the most out that intercooler so if power is what you're after there's plenty of threads on here for where to start Thumbs Up . Matt.

Thanks LRA, that’s as I thought. I’ll go with the zero offset ones.

Trickster, I’m excited for when the new IC goes on, it should be good. I can definitely notice a difference with the new transfer box and exhaust. The revs are much more usable and the exhaust makes it feel a lot less strangles if that makes sense.

Its been a busy week with fitting all the stuff that has been cluttering up the garage for the past month.
First job was to fit the Wipac LED light set. Very straightforward other than having to switch the wires over - my soldering skills have diminished since the last time I picked up a soldering iron 5 or 6 years ago. The DRLs were installed under the bumper, ready to be wired in.

The roof rack went in with only a minor hitch in that the middle clamps are obstructed by the alpine window, rendering them unusable so it’s current held on with 4 clamps whilst I thing of a solution.

A dual battery system is mid way through installation, bad weather and a lack of parts out a halt to that until the parts turn up. In the meantime the inverter was mounted behind the passenger seat on the bulkhead.

The most notable change however is the new wheels and tyres. In the end I went for 16x8 et0 which I think looks great, fill the arches nicely and are much quieter than the mud terrains they replaced.

The coming week will be spent waiting for parts to arrive to finish off the electrical jobs and probably buying more things that I don’t need.

Another busy week juggling deadlines and work in the defender. This week, progress was made with the DRL’s which are now installed and functioning. The dual battery system is getting there, a bit more soldering and wiring to be done then that’ll be compete.

Onto more exciting matters, the rear seats have been installed along with carpet which now makes the rear look positively luxurious.

Thanks to everyone that chipped in with suggestions for a wheel carrier, I went with the britpart one as assuming the wheel doesn’t fall off, I’ll consider it a good buy.

I also purchased a Mud Stuff sub locker and sub last week somewhat impulsively. Oops.
Anyhow, the locker is installed under the cubby and has raised it nicely so it’s more usable as an arm rest whilst driving which is a added bonus. The sub will be wired in this weekend once I’ve worked out how to get the wires out of the locker, but I’m sure some solution will manifest itself.

L110, I’ve been toying with the idea of changing everything to black but the price of replacement door cards quickly put me off that idea.
