Anti Virus software; recommendations
Having been a user of AVG for umteen million years I have reached a time when I need to say enough and look for an alternative solution.

I am looking for recommendations from the group as the latest trick from AVG is make all my files 'read only' so I am unable to update/modify excel spreadsheets and word documents because it thinks they are a threat!!! AAAAAAGHHHHGH Twisted Evil Cheers Don.

To Change a read-only file in Exel
Click the Excel file button then click Save or Save As if you have previously saved the document.
Click Tools.
Click General Options.
Clear the Read-only recommended check box.
Click OK.
Save the document. You might need to save it as another file name if you have already named the document. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Contrary to popular belief, the built-in (assuming you're running Windows) Windows Defender anti-virus software is actually one of the best/most reliable AV packages available. As long as you let Windows Update do its stuff, there is no need for 3rd party AV and more often than not it will actually inhibit your work rather than protect your PC as you have found out.

The other point to bear in mind is that a lot of 3rd party AV software tends to be very resource intensive, you'll likely notice an increase in performance in removing it, especially on older PCs.

I've never used a 3rd party AV and never had a problem with malware.

PS: That's not to say it's impossible to get malware, but extra AV doesn't really provide anything extra than Windows Defender so I'd recommend saving pennies for your real life Defender Very Happy Thumbs Up Matt.

I've been using Bitdefender free for a while on a few PCs. Works well and stays quiet. Extra bonus is that it blocks any trackers in email images.
I've also got Adaware's Antivirus running on one as a test. Seems OK, but needs some manual updates now and again.
If you're running Windows 10, the built in one gets pretty decent reviews too.

I used to rung AVG, but it became too naggy and constantly trying to get me to upgrade to paid. Not sure if that's still the case though,

Absolutely correct. Thumbs Up
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Similarly to others I don't really run 3rd party AV on my computers.
In work we also used to rely on Windows Defender. Eventually we changed to use BitDefender, but I don't know what triggered the change. It's set to do scans over night so it doesn't slow down the machine during work. Never had a problem with it.
