Hi all,
I bought a 58 XS 90 6m ago which only had 20,000miles on it. Am loving it (did the airbox mod last week, what a difference! Anyway I am nr Stroud in Gloucestershire, the Landy has had annual services at MJ Fews every May, so it coming due now. Have used Fews before (LR and Isuzu) and not had any worries about them, but was after any other recommendations for servicing. When I had a S3 I used to do it myself, have downloaded the service sheet and it looks a bit more involved but possibly doable... Any thoughts v welcome! |

do it yourself if your keeping it, the filters will cost about £60 for all gen bits and there is nothing hard about it. ASDA often do 4 litres of A5 Castrol magnatec for £23 so just over £100 for an oil service with fuel and air filters DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

You can get all the filters ( air, oil and fuel) plus sump plug for £38 inc VAT from forum sponsor Advanced Factors
These are Mahle a good brand. Green ovals will add significantly to the cost and you will be fitting the same as Mahle Use code LRVF for 5% disocunt |

Mahle stuff ordered, off to Asda on an oil hunt. Was hoping to be able to do it myself as that was part of the point of getting the Defender! Thanks to all for great advice, love this forum as it has everything!

Opie oils usually a good source for oil (and a site sponsor). Also you get a 10% discount if you use a "DEF2" code at checkout.

Hi , not too far from you (Tetbury),just thought I would let you know my experiences of servicing my 2.4 at home.
Make sure you have a good 27mm socket to undo the oil filter housing as mine always seems to be very tight to loosen even though I don't over tighten it. The oil comes out very fast and goes everywhere ,then it hits the steering rod and gives you another mess!! Fill the diesel filter to the neck before replacing and you will have no issues. Air filter can be a bit awkward to change ,but once you have got the nack it's easy. If you have serviced an older Land Rover you will have no bother,as I am ham fisted and like to hit things with a big hammer,I am sure for you it will be a breeze. Also good to bond with your truck. I use Comma oils, they're cheap via amazon you can look up the specific oil's on the Comma website. They're all made in Kent.
The oil filters are quite reasonable from Land Rover dealers, as are the sump bungs. Air filters are really expensive from Land Rover so I just buy MANN ones from Euro car parts - never pay full price at ECP there are always discount codes of at least 30% available. |

there is a sticky on here showing how to service it yourself including all the transmission and axle oils, and all the tools you need DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

if you are going to keep the Defender long-term, and service it yourself, suggest looking at a FEMCO oil plug. Do a search for FEMCO in ere... Makes oil changes a cinch... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

When removing the oil filter, the oil has a tendency to cover your hand.
Buy a collapsible silicone bowl, push your extension bar through it, and then it acts as a baffle to stop oil running down onto your hands. Click image to enlarge If you're doing it yourself, as I do, take a photo of the mileage, the products used, oil drained etc. Download the service sheet and do all the checks that would be done at a dealer. Then you have the evidence of the service being done for the next owner, and not just written in the book. |
