New Burglar Alarm
Given the diverse backgrounds of the people driving Defenders, this seems like a good place to ask about burglar alarms.

Our old DIY Yale is showing its age and will no longer accept phone calls to allow remote access.

I see that there's a new Yale that allows App acces, but I'm not happy with that as if ever Yale turned off the server, or the server was hacked, my alarm would either stop working or become a security hazard.

I'm trying to find an alarm that has some form of network access so that I can login via my VPN to see what's going on and turn off or on without the current rigmarole. I don't want there to be any external access without first logging into the VPN.
I've found an American company that does what I need, but it's not available over here (I think it's due to radio frequency restrictions).
I've also found various Raspberry Pi projects, but they all retrofit an existing wired alarm. My current alarm is wireless.

Anyone know of other options?

http://www.texe.com

We use these - the system has a outbound connectivity but does involve using the texe servers (they are brand new so expect a long life). They also have a old solution that is inbound via VPN or port forwarding but its EOL now imo.

They are VERY friendly to a DIY installer as well Thumbs Up

Texe do an awful lot of stuff! Really struggling to get my head around it. At the moment, I'm thinking of swallowing my pride and just buying the Honeywell Sucre stuff.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, I went with Texe as it was easy to get ahold of the engineering software & manuals. I work in IT so once I had that it was really straight forward Thumbs Up

We have used the Premier Elite 64 in a few places now, its been superb! SMS, Internet connectivity etc was all really straight forward.

If you go wireless, check out the spec's I was amazed by how many systems didn't use a two way design & encryption in that a simple jammer could render the system useless. Ricochet range is also insane thanks to the mesh!

Maybe I need to 'man up' and work out what to do with Texe!

I do software, not hardware for a living, so not used to rummaging around behind cupboards like the network guys.

The Texe stuff is starting to make sense. Where did you get an installation manual? Only registered installers appear to be able to download.

Went round in circles a few more times, then discovered that Yale do an alarm that does 90% of what I need and is compatible with my old 433Mhz sensors. Less work and less money!

The alarm I've just taken out was a HSA6400! Doesn't look like my new Yale is too good either though! Looks safe to assume that the clever burglars break into houses with stuff worth stealing. Only the thick ones would bother with our house and they're not likely to be jamming anything!

I'll certainly not be putting up the Yale window stickers though.

I find the best option to not learning the technobabble is to invite DieselJim over, offe bacon sarnie and copious tea, let him chatter to himself, offer more bacon sarnies and tea and smile nicely at the end of the day and admire the nice work he does. 110 D250 SE HT
