Mine have been powder coated by a dealer for its first owner. Still looking good after 4.5 years.

It's not impossible but the finish can be a bit questionable. I've seen wheels both stove enamelled and powder coated that give a nice, hard finish. Darren

But I have seen series wheels that have been galvanized.... 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Good to hear about powder coating, but I had wondered if it would still crack around the nuts just the same as paint and then rust, which the white highlights very badly
I was thinking of galvanizing, then painting, so would finish still be a problem? Or maybe then cost prohibitive. Looking for a durable solution in a classic OE style with a decent turning circle for my old 200tdi - that's all. Otherwise I would put my spare set of Zu's on it. . . . . . . I would say to have them galvanised properly, they should be spun galvanised to ensure the Finnish is even,
having them just dipped might be too rough for wheels? 🤔 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

I don’t know how my wheels have been prepped as I’m the second owner, but no cracks and no rust. 👍🏻

RNLI ones are galvanised. So it is possible although it won’t generally be all that smooth.

Just to clarify - the website linked for the RNLI vehicles says galvanised "wheel rims", does that mean the whole wheel is not galvanised.
Thinking about, once tyres are fitted most of the wheel should not have an issue with corrosion (allowing for a little moisture in the air used to pump them up. Not seen the wing extensions fitted to the tracked RNLI ones before |

I had the wheels on the Series 1 galvanised some 27 years ago and they came out very smooth with no rough areas but I think galvanising can be a bit of a lottery as I have had other stuff done which was terrible and had to go back to the galvanisers for re-doing.

Most galvanisers won’t do rims nowadays as liability issues.
I had a batch of 40 boat trailer rims galvanised recently and had to sign disclaimers that they were for off road use only, and even then it was a fight to get them done. I had a set of tubeless wolfs shot blasted and hot zinc sprayed some years ago and they are still perfect despite living 5 meters from the sea. |

Ooh that sounds promising and forgive my complete ignorance but is the hot sink spraying a job for bodyshop, wheel refurbishers or elsewhere and would you think that process be available in the OE white? Rob

I have the standard LD Defender steel wheels fitted. I have just had them powder coated and pleased with the job. It cost £220 + Vat for the 5 wheels. The company did alloy wheels but I think they only do powder coating.

It is a specialised process done by metal refinishers and places which do shot blasting. It is the next best thing to hot dip galvanising, and very good for bulkheads too as they don’t buckle! They come back in a rough metallic grey which is an excellent base for painting, and doesn’t need any etch primer etc, so you can spray them any colour you like. The place I use can then powder coat after the hot zinc spraying if required. I’ve just had pair of 90 cappings and a load of brackets and odds and ends blasted and hot zinced for £90, I’d expect £30 a wheel, but they will never rust again. |
