RRC Lucas stick switches !!! help
Hi Guy’s

So I’ve decided that I’d quite like RRC sticks on my Defender and I’m handy with electrics and pretty sure they can be convinced to fit.

So I get hold of a pair, They are marked up as Lucas 217SA and 218SA

I have more than a bit of a hunt around trying to find out just what the pin out of the switches are and I spend an evening ignoring eastenders and prodding them with my multimeter but I’m struggling to work out just what the pinout of the switches are with the exception of the horn and the washer control !

So I ring Lucas and talk to a very nice chap who basically says ‘there really old and we have lost the diagrams for them’ !!

So the challenge here is does anybody have any idea or even a diagram of how these switches work ?

Thanks for your patience and help …..

Martin

Those switches were also used in Disco 200Tdi, Metro, Maestro &, I think, Montegos from the 1980s so you may find some help on the respective forums? - might even be worth asking Procta as he seems to have a history with Metros? Probably a pretty good chance of finding wiring diagrams for those cars too using Google?

You're probably going to need the original connectors to fit the switches, so obtain some from a scrap wiring loom with a length of wire still attached.
The colours of the wires will help identifying which does what when referencing a wiring diagram.

I'm a bit surprised that people consider 30 year old switches an upgrade. Laughing

Can you not get the diagram from a Haynes manual?

The loose leads are fibre optic cables to illuminate the icons on the ends of the stalks. I can tell you that much.

The wiring and pin outs for them will be on the old RAVE CD which includes the Range Rover classic, there should be loads of those on ebay if not for free download from somewhere.

Personally though given their age, I think I'd look at something more modern, like the Honda switches used in the last Rovers. The old Metro stalks you have were pretty reliable, but who knows how the plastics will have aged. They might fail 2 weeks after you get them working.

Not wanting to hijack things but this thread has got me thinking about upgrading my own wiper/indicator stalks & wondering whether it might be a better option to use wiper/indicator stalks from D2 or FL1? Anyone tried this? They are certainly more readily available second hand & even new.

Have now realised that the later D1/D2/fl1 stalks have pull on/pull off for the main beam so won't work, have replaced mine with genuine Lucas switches now

Back in the day, it was very popular for the rover metro lads to swop these for Metro gti units, as they had the intermit wiper feature, also there was a fibre optic version i think from the LDV van too which was a popular upgrade too ( might be the newest to sorce) No one really went in depth in going as far as the pin lay out at all sadly. Was talk about fitting the later Rover Honda ones, but that was too many wires to be cut and re joined. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
