After a few months of very few improvements, it was time to invest.. and a few hundred... COUGH... later.
New boots and rock sliders! After a long debate and a lot of research and a last minute change from AT to MT... a new set of Cooper Discoverer STT Pro's arrived - 265/75R16 giving a bit of a wider stance than the old General Grabber AT2 235's! Also with a more aggressive tread... they look like they could eat anything that was thrown at them... and to be fair... so far they have (next update to come)! Click image to enlarge Nice wee drifts! Luckily the new MT's arrived... just before the 'Beast from the East' hit.... unluckily I was stuck in Italy with no flight home and no way to get them fitted! So it was a case (after traveling across Europe and North England) of waiting it out!. Click image to enlarge New Cooper STT Pros The rock sliders, brought from Dixion Fabrication off eBay - a cracking set - welds look really clean and they are well painted! Fitting was simple... and cold! But once the old rusted bolts were out the way the new sliders fitted with ease. Thank god for Dremel! Now time to see what the Coopers and rocks are made of!
The annual 'Muddy Good Fun' meet up in the Lake District: Last year's weather was hot and sunny and we spent the day in shorts and t-shirts.... this year... not so much! -3 degrees and occasional whiteouts... snow, mud, ice and rock put all four cars to the test... but all pulled through with... almost ease! With a working diff lock, MT's and extra clearance of the rocks, the 90 was superb, although that might have been more to do with my co-driver than me or the truck! Covering Park Moor, Little Langdale, Grizedale Forerst and the Old Coach Road.. there was another but I can't remember it! Plenty of laughs, insults and Landy chat was had by all... a fantastic day... video edit to come shortly! Click image to enlarge It started clean.. Click image to enlarge MT's making life a fair amount easier than last year! Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge A quick photo stop and away! To be fair, I don't really know! I guess in the end it was a bit of 'oh lets just go for it'... also... every man and is dog has BFG's, why follow the crowd!?
The original debate was between getting AT or MT. With the classic 'what are we going to use it for?' The Defender for us is a 2nd car so long road journeys are in the Beemer, and we we do use the 90, its for Scout Camps, Green Lanes and heading up through the Highlands - it probably will spend 80% of the time on the road, but when it is on that 20% Rock, Snow, Grass and Mud... we wanted it to perform well! The MT's won! Over the last weekend in the Lakes, the Coopers' definitely proved their worth! They are brilliantly aggressive when you want them to be and actually not that noisy on the road, there is a 'whurr' but get over 50mph the TD5 drowns them out! Also the Coopers have a 'newer' tread design compared to the BFG's and the central longitude tread apparently makes them quieter... that or their marketing team did well! Also when buying 5, the coopers work out £175 cheaper... which gives you £175 to spend on Rock Sliders! Chris 2014 Discovery 4 TDV6 HSE 2003 Defender 90 TD5 CSW |

New Terrafirma Silicon Hoses fitted!
Due to a drop in MPG started investigating why and found a split inter-cooler hose. Thread here: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic60474.html So a lovely evening out in the rain fitting these last night! Having the right tools for the job... what a difference a £9 set of Sealy hoes removers makes! Light work of the old rubber! Awesome wee set! Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Also fitted stainless vent pins, the old ones were becoming more and more corroded and starting to effect the bulkhead. Any shout for treating the rest that is there? I have the same issue with the vent pins. I will order myself some stainless steel ones as well. Would be interested in seeing what people say about treating the surface rust around them on the bulkhead as mine is the same. Instagram - @Land_Rover_Defender

LandymanStefan... the Vent Pins or the Turbo pipes?
Answer to both is yes. Although I would recommend a set of hose remover hooks, makes life A LOT easier when breaking the current seal! I must say the engine is so much quieter at 65mph now! You can actually hear the Tyre whurr! DAMN IT! At least I know the engine is happier now! Chris 2014 Discovery 4 TDV6 HSE 2003 Defender 90 TD5 CSW |
